Seems like that without the fornt mount, the header studs could be in jeapardy due to excess lateral vibration. |

Maybe the race header and exhaust is lighter and can get away without the front mount... dunno. I do know that a sheared exhaust header stud is not something you want to experience. As I said before... a Buell exhaust is NOT to be trifled with. Bill |

I am running the Daytona Boss 3". After several modifications to the rear bracket (2 broken in 1000 miles) I haven't had any problems. It sounds (and feels for about 50 feet) very deep at idle, always attracts attention even in the Harley crowd. At speed it is loud but not obnoxious, unless you are wide open, but I like that sometimes. I have not heard the 2 1/2, but as long as you don't have little old lady neighbors the 3" is great. Lost a bit of low end, but with so much to start who really cares. Let me know if you want mounting suggestions / pictures of my modifications. |

Supertrapp has a whole new system for the 2001 Buells, supposedly being marketed through Buell only. Anyone heard about this? Ride fun! Dave |

Gear Loki really likes the 2.5 version. In all my chats with Rek. We discussed the pro and con of the three sizes(2,2.5,3). The 2.5 is the pipe for the mildly hot rodded motor. Now if your motor has some serious work done the the 3 is the way to go. Now this comes from a lost soul riding a 2k M2. With the 2.5, a Force Sidewinder(soon to have the cf Racewinder cover), and rejetting done(as of yesterday). No dyno time, but seat of the pants is a real kick around 3k rpm. Mounting is a whos who of how it was done. I am still using the early hanger on my bike. No problems as of yet(with over 9k miles on it). Now I think I have a question for everyone else who has hung an aftermarket pipe. Was your rear hanger mount tightly bolted up? or was it slightly loose? Hmmmmm Loki |

Gear, Your gonna fall in love with the rumble. Just ask Mak what he thinks of the sound. He has heard it from in front, beside me, and following.... Loki just waiting to get a broken exhaust stud extracted. |

DVNT: My opinion? Really whimpy poorly designed cantelevered mount by V&H. Also possibly improperly installed (installed with a bind/stress?). I've heard some have successfully tried leaving the upper rear mounting bolt slightly loose (loctite the nut) or addd a flexible strap between the case and the bracket to let it float and avoid excess vibration and/or binding. |

Loki... Let me know how much time, cost, and effort was involved resolving your sheared header stud. I had the same thing, and just drilled the idiot thing out. I figured that a new head was around $300 from Buell, and I would pay at least half that to a machine shop to get the old one out and cleaned up right, not to mention the time spent pulling the rocker boxes and heads to get them there... Drilling in place got me back running that weekend. Fortunately, it was one that I could get at with a drill... It ended up about half a bolt width off by the time I got to full depth (hard to square it with the head still on the bike. Carefully retapped, carefully reinstalled, and no problems in about 500 miles. Time will tell... I watch it closely, and make sure the rest of the exhaust system is well installed and as unstressed as possible. I took the low road, you took the high road, we can use these two datapoints to help others make the call in the future. It was a close call either way. Bill |

Bill, Just dropped the bike off this morning. He was needing a reason to order the drill guide for the exhaust studs. fits in the port and is located using the good stud. Allows you to drill nice and straight. The thing runs around $85 for the guide plate. If he charges me around a c-note I can call it even and the go and order one for myself this winter. Just for that next time..... Bry |

Good luck Loki... I had forgotten about that middle of the road approach. Custom Chrome will sell that guide if anyone is looking for a local source for it. That is probably the best approach overall. A very low risk approach. We need a "badweb lending library" for tools like this... And I forget if you said why it broke in the first place, but do yourself a favor and get the updated front muffler hanger while you have it all apart. It SHOULD be a free part (unless you go to Eastgate Buell in Cincinnati ) and does a far better job of securing the entire system. With the old bracket and the shredded rubber bits, I had worn half way through the bracket in less then 500 miles of riding, and ground off a corner of the voltage regulator heatsink. I also double nutted header studs with stainless steel nuts... as much to make it easier to inspect at a glance as to keep stuff from rattling off. Yesterday I went and bought more loktite blue. Pre Buell, each bottle lasted roughly 5 years. Not that I am a Buell owner, they last about 2 months Do they sell this stuff in gallon containers? Bill |

Bill, It was entirely my own doing. Was pulling the stock header off to hang my polished one. I am catching up from having it in a salt water/air enviroment. locktite and anti-sieze by the gallon Give me a ping sometime this week. Next weekend might be heading towards Dayton and the museum. Maybe meet up sometime. loki |

Would love to connect, but I will be leaving for the extended family vacation to Myrtle Beach SC. If the planets align (and I will be working pretty hard to see that they do), I will be trailering the cyclone. I never looked forward to a family vacation so much! Good luck with the header stud! Let me know if you want housing / food recomendations in Dayton.. I have friends and family there (and currently am working there at Lexis-Nexis). Bill |

May the weather gnomes be smiling upon thee. Right now the guy I dropped my girl off at is really starting to irk me. Dropped it off fri and he says I should get to it this afternoon. Stop in sat afternoon, ahh my welder friend just called me and says he can't get here for a couple of hours. Looks at me and says "I'll call you when its ready" and " It should be done this afternoon". Then me "well I won't be home till after 6" and walk out the door. One thing that really gets me is someone who says yeah today. Sorry about yesterday, should be this afternoon. Bry |

Anybody have any suggestions on how to remove scratches from the factory stainless headers? I had an idiot pull out in front of me at a few minutes ago and had to lay the bike down on the right side...nothing major--just gravel scratches. It beat the hell out of a new set of forks/triple trees had I t-boned the idiot. |

Jazlawyer, If they are deep enough like it sounds, I would get yourself some wet/dry automotive sandpaper and do it that way. |

Leeow Thanks...will it remove the "gold" tint...I saw somewhere else on these pages a suggestion of muthers or meguires...also there seems to be a "grain" on the finish...sand with grain: i.e, around the circumference? Scratches aren't that bad...probably only one who notices is me! |

Dart, Contact Daytona HD/Buell either by phone or web. Otherwise use your local shop to do it. The cost of the pipe should not differ even with shipping charges. Ask anyone who has one and you will find they feel its a good investment. As for me I got over 10k on mine and the sound has not changed. Loki |

here's my $.02 on the exhaust issue... I just got done reading an email from wileyco service. They are awesome. I have a stainless steel wileyco on my X-1. I love the sound...obnoxious but not obnoxious enough to attract cops. Anyhow, it is extremely secure. There are two ring mounts in the rear, one front muffler mount, AND one collar mount securing the elbow to the headers. The front muffler mount did break at the weld recently. HOWEVER, This is more of an issue due to who installed it rather than a manufacturer issue. Regardless, they have a LIFETIME warranty and they didn't give me sh*t about it. SAME DAY I EMAILED IS THE SAME DAY ISSUE RESOLVED. The service person is sending out a replacement adapter through next day air. By the way, even with the front weld broken, the muffler is secured on so well that I would need two more system failures for something BAD to happen (collar break and one of the rings breaking). My next bike will have a wileyco too. And oh yeah, did I tell you it looks sweet? Anyone who wants to know more, just shoot me a email. |

Does anyone have any input on the D&D slip-on v. V&H v. others? Also, does the White Bros. fit any bike or just the S1/X1? I want to order this next week. |

Quick question. I lost a header nut off my 2000 x1 there is a good 1/4 -1/2 gap from the port to the header, is it ok to drive it like this to the dealer or will I risk burning up the valves? Thanks Jake |

Jake, Take one of the nuts off the other header and head down to your local hardware store to match it up. I think it's a 5/16" fine thread, but verify it. A cheap nut is better than other problems. You may also have to get a deep wall 1/2" socket to put the nut back on. Buy a couple of extra nuts while your there and keep them in a pocket. |

My supertrapp broke a while ago. Today they sent me the replacement. Sort of. The one I had was their IDS muffler that I used with a race header. I'd polished it, looked and worked great until it fractured around the periphery of the inlet to the can. The one I just recieved is a BUELL part number 65012-01Y. It's really quite beautiful, fully polished, with a dual front support that is welded to the pipe (welds could be cleaner but they look strong). Still uses the rear strap support that is questionable. But the damned thing has an integral 90 degree inlet pipe!! I can't use it with my race header! I asked supertrap to just send me an inlet pipe on the cracked one and I'd take it from there. Instead, they send me this beautiful pipe THAT I CAN'T USE!!! ARRGGGHHH!!!! I'd post a pic but my wife has the digital camera in florida. I'll send the BUELL instructions that came with it from supertrapp to Blake. If my friend Tom doesn't want to buy it, I'll sell it here. I already have a V&H slip on that I can use with the stock header, I want a Race header capable muffler. This one would be difficult to modify to fit the race header. BTW, while it isn't a race muffler, per se, it is designated for off road applications only. Al |
