I can appreciate the aesthetic difference, but is there much of a difference in heat protection? ( I like the look of ceramic coated over heat wrap tape. ) I’d imagine heat tape being thicker and porous will trap more heat in and allow less to escape to the riders leg, is that a correct assumption? Also when people have them ceramic coated, why do they do the inside as well? Does that have any negative affect? (Message edited by coastie on July 21, 2006) |

No negative affect on inside coating. Only Positive. It's a thin coating, so if restriction is your concern, it shouldn't be. They do inside and out for better flow and insulation. Check out Jet-Hot coatings website. That's where I'll be sending mine. They've got a new Sterling Silver coating that looks pretty sweet. They'll send you an information packet and short video to explain the benefits. And for approx $120 for head and can, ya can't beat it if for looks alone. |

Does the ceramic coating have similar insulating properties (heat to the riders leg) as the wrap? Looking at the jet-hot web page, I can see a temp difference graph, but it looks like the wrap may be a lot better to protect the rider. |

Also, how much of a PITA is it to remove the headers? |

Check the Knowledge Vault. You'll find a lot of good info there. Here are a couple of links. http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/3842/179639.html?1146019343 http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/3842/182918.html?1143233156 |

I've read where the ceramic coating will reduce heat on the header by 175deg and definitely moves heat away from the engine and out the muffler better. |

I had mine jet coated and what a difference in temp on my leg and the fan seems to come on a little less. And it looks great too! I paid about 80 bucks for mine to be coated. I was thinking about rapping the back header about a 1/4 ways back, this might keep more of the heat off the back of the motor and my leg. Any ways here's a picture of the bike with the exhaust coating.

Hey, lost in Ohio, nice job on rapping the pipe. Looks good. Also love the scoop. Where did you get it and how much did it cost. I'm wondering if that scoop wood fit a SS Long frame. Does anyone on the board know this. |

Thx. The bike is a long and mounting the scoop was simple bolt on affair. 10 minute job. Lots of loc tit please. The scoop is a Ilmberger from trojan....one of the site sponsors. Took bout two weeks to get it less than that was shipping from trojan......With exchange rate and all it was round $300. I will say I am very pleased with the quality the fiber is laid down perfect with no flaws in the pattern. britnett-carver.co.uk/Trojan-Horse/prods/202.html I am going to order the matching right side scoop pretty soon or am I gonna bob that ugly tail first. Not sure yet. shhhh don't tell my wife. |

I used the company Jet-Hot. They coat them inside and out, great quality finish and easy to clean. It also matches the race can coating. |

Thanks Lost in Ohio, I didn't notice the frame difference and the timing cover. I really like the scoop. I also would like a carbon fiber scoop for both sides too. I just don't like the price. But it looks nice. |

Mine is in the shop getting coated right now. Now granted, this may be partially sales talk, but the tech told me that one of the problems with the wrap is that it keeps moisture inside the pipe (condensation) and moisture under and within the wrap itself. I guess it can lead to failure of the header. |

PC modeler, I think any moisture that builds on my pipes will burn off, since they run way hotter than water boils. The wrap has a coating you spray on that seems to keep the moisture out of the cloth.

I agree with Lorazepam. I bet that the pipe gets over 400 degrees.....the stuff you spray the wrap with is good for 2000 degrees. The bike runs much cooler after three days of running with it wrapped. |

Had my first spirited ride today with the header wrap (used the spray). There is a definite heat reduction and I really like the look... very cool..just needed to get past the toxic fumes at stop lights. |

Yep....I stinks for a while. I pulled up to the first light in a cloud of smoke. Man where they smoking. Not to bad after 4 or 5 days of riding. |

Yeah, it wasn't too bad this morning on the way to work. They cured into a cast-like shell. One less thing to polish, for now...I dunno, it gives the bike a textured, industrial look like one of those contraptions from a Mad Max flick. We'll see about the long term integrity of the headers... |

you will need to touch them up every once in a while. i live in new england and hit it twice per year. been on the bike two years now and look almost as good as the day they went on. could get another 2 years from them. the heat is down and thats what i cared about. |

Good to know there were no long-term adverse effects so far, on yours at least..I agree, as long as the heat is down a bit, it works for me.. |
