OK, fellers -- (cross posted in KV as well -- ) I've got a baker chain conversion on my Y2K M2 -- the output tranmission shaft sproket loosened up a tad (bout a 64th of movement), so I figured I'd just not tightened it right (though I sure thought I had) -- took off the lil allenhead both that keeps the big ol nut for loosening, removed the (stock) nut -- cleaned the threads on the output shaft and nut thouroughly, put the nut back on, tighten it to spec, followed by the lil allen head bolt that keep the nut from loosening -- bout 300 miles later, the sprocket was loose again -- nut didn't SEEM to have moved (retaining bolt still in place) -- I've been through this passion play three times, now -- the guy at Baker sez my output shaft bearing may be moving? can anyone offer any insight? thanks! |

Hmm, with a pulley the service manual says to tighten to some torque spec and then to tighten more I think 45 degrees more. You make a pencil mark when the nut is torqued and then tighten more which is almost impossible. Not sure if this pertains to a sprocket.... The output shaft going bad is possible. |

Den -- the Baker instructions (well done, btw) refered to the SM procedure (50 lbft, 30 to 40 degrees) -- I followed it to the letter (at least 2 times outa four) -- bummer, but thatnk's for the reply |

Check the splines on the sproket. I had the same thing happen to my pulley when the splines were getting worn pretty bad. Take a thread file to the shaft too for good measure |

Spidey -- threads are fine, thanks -- how can the splines wearing make the sprocket move not around the splines (in a circle) but in and out (as if the nut loosened)? not arguing, tryin to unnerstand ;-} |

I never quite figured it out myself. But the way my splines wore were from the engine side to the outside almost loik a cone. I am assuming this caused it to wobble causing the metal to deform and act like a loose nut condition BTW this is just a therory, but anytime I had a loose nut (beside in the head) the splines were always worn... that's all I got LOL BTW, Nice to meet ya again LMAO |

Ah, I asked my question on the wrong thread... Since the shaft is moving longitudinally, and since the sprocket end of the shaft seems to be assembled properly, why not take a look at the other end of the shaft? Maybe there's something else that holds it in place, lengthwise, that's worn? rt ...this is the kind of stuff that happens when your little bells fall off... |

The shaft is pressed into the bearing so it may be possible that it could be loose but you would know if that was the case.. Enjoy that smooooth Scotch |

I can see how that would happen, Spidy. Not sure why the splines would wear if everything were snugged up tight, but if they did wear like you said, the sprocket could wobble on the reduced diameter of the shaft. rt ps--didja ever find a Norton cylinder? |

well, after lookin at the SM and Parts Book, I'm still stumped -- unless the big ball bearing that supports the output shaft is totally cashed, there seems no way for lateral (in and out) play to develop -- while the cashing of the bearing is certainly possible, it's making no noise at all at all (I thought grumbly noises was part of the failure mode) curiouser and curiouser Spidey -- we could set up a conference call, and Thang and me could tell war stories -- cyclider would be bored lickety split! |

doesn't seem to be -- there seem to be two to be concerned about -- big one around the output shaft, and another that you can see in the middle of the shaft by removing the lil seal -- watch out fer the nannies, Mike -- good to see/hear you |
