I just replaced my primary cover on my 04 lightning XB12s, I would like to know how much gear oil goes in there? An exact number would be greatly appreciated. |

One quart should do it. The level needs to be at the bottom of the clutch spring with bike upright/level. David |

I'd be careful. When you drain the primary, a significant amount of oil is still left in the cases. After taking my primary cover off to change the stator, approximately six ounces of oil was still inside. Blindly adding 32 more ounces would have overfilled the primary. I'd fill the primary up using the exact procedure outlined in the service manual to keep from overfilling it. |

28 ounces after drainage places at the correct level. 32oz is too much - you will know if you overfill when it is difficult to find the neutral. |

What DC said. 28oz puts it at just the right spot every time (in a '03 XB9R, at least). |

With my '04 XB12s upright, I have used exactly 1 qt. which brought it to the position on the clutch spring as per the manual. |
