My dealer wants 3 hours of labor for the Race Kit Install . That seems way too long. How long should it take? | ||

I took my time, documented things, and shot pictures of the install and it took me maybe 4 hours and I'd never done it before. It's really not hard, you should do it yourself. | ||

Took me a couple of hours too. Save the money you would on labor and buy the VDSTS software, install the kit yourself and do your own TPS reset. | ||

It didn't take me very long, but I didn't keep track of the time. I took my time, shot photos, read (and reread) the supplied info and the service manual, drank some beer, had a cigar, drank some beer, paid close attention to the torque specs and all while BSing with my wife. It probably only took 3-4 hours. I had never done it before either. I should have taken Aeholtons' advice and bought the TPS stuff. All in all it was very painless and the payoff is worth it! | ||

Thanks for all the replies! I can't wait to install it. Where do I get the VDSTS software? Some of you mentioned that you took pictures. If any are readily available please let me know! | ||

I have the software in stock 195.25 is the price we also charge 3 hours labor for a race kit install. | ||

Here is the breakdown from our shop for a Lightning: ECM install (incl TPS reset) .6 hrs Muffler install .6 hrs Install air filter (incl desnorkel. not needed on ULY) .5 hrs Test ride (incl fill up time at gas station) .25 hrs So a total time of 1.95 hrs. That time is easy for anyone who has done a few. TPS reset should be in your memory if you work on a Buell anyway, so don't let the jazz you about doing it like its a special procedure. It only takes an allen wrench. For a Firebolt, this time is longer because of the time to remove mirrors/front fairing. (Message edited by josh_cox on July 11, 2006) | ||

I read up on how to do it on this board and at Sport Twins and had no problem with out the manual even. Get past the BS that the factory says about removing and replacing the belt tension pully just to get the muffler of and on saves about an hour. Once the rear muffler bands are reversed it would only take about 3-7 min. to get the muffler off. The ECM is only 2 bolts so go figure. For someone who has done this a few times I would figure no longer than an hour. You can find pics of mine on Sport Twins. | ||

I just put mine on yesterday. Started at 4:30 PM and rode out the door at 5:40 even after cleanup and gearing up to go home. I did it in the garage at work with no lift and only hand tools. I used my IPAQ with the VDSTS to reset the TPS and monitor temp to set the warm idle speed. It took a day of riding for the new ECM to learn the bike a bit but this bike went from extremely fun to Stupidly FUN!!! The bike is total hooliganism on steroids, viagra, and some serious espresso caffiene all thrown into the mix! I've been lofting the front wheel regurarly in third gear and even got a little lift out of fourth gear this evening! Damn thing pulls like a CAT Diesel and I've never experienced that before! Oh, it now sounds like a real Buell should also. Not too loud but gets your attention. WoW!! Thanks Daves!  BC Steve |
