I just picked up a 2002 in good condition but with what I think is a bit of spark plug fouling. I know this sounds terribly dumb but do I need to pull the gas tank to change the plug on a Thumper? If not, what kind of tool/spark plug wrench does one use to remove the plug with the tank in place -- it looks too tight to do easily and I can find nothing in the shop manual. Can you help? | ||

Welcome! A box wrench will work so the tank doesnt need to be removed. However you'll find tank removal is extremely easy after you do it the first time. The fuel line doesnt even need to be disconnected, just set the tank over to the side of the frame. If you dont change a lot of spark plugs, I'd remove the tank and use a torque wrench. With the tank on you'll be working a little blind increasing the change of breaking the plug and cross threading. Avoid removing the plug when the engine is hot! | ||

Thanks, Gearheaderiko. I just read up on how to pull the tank -- from the shop manual PDF -- and I can see it shouldn't be difficult. Do people agree one absolutely has to use the H-D spark plug, or will an equivalent do? Again, thanks! | ||

Use whatever appropriate spark plug you want. I prefer Splitfires, Buell or NGK. I have my opinions about the rest. | ||

Wal*Mart PowerSport #8809-1(sparkplug) ... Timing mark just coming into the rear of the timimg plug hole ... Fuel/Air Ratio 12 to 1 ... Makes a stocker run a lot better !!! In BLASTing LaFayette (Message edited by buellistic on July 05, 2006) |
