Was excited to get my VDSTS and finally get my TPS reset, hooked it to my laptop with a serial adaptor I had around onlt to find it wouldn't communicate. Kept getting a message to check connection and hook up battery cables(?), monkeyed around w/ it an hour and successfully connected only briefly. Is keyspan really that important or am I screwing something up? Any advice is greatly appreciated.
Happy 4th!

USB to Serial adapters are notoriously flakey. The Keyspan is the only one I've ever used that works consistantly with every device I needed to use it with.

If your computer has the DB9 connector use that and hook it direct. I had the same problem with those adapters.

Yea, guess I'll blow some $ for a keyspan. My HP has a swiss army knife array of connectors, but DB9 isn't one of 'em.

Keyspan adapter is mandatory for use.

I just purchased the VDSTS also. I bought the keyspan adapter. I could get the scan tool to work with my stock ECM on XB12X. Unfortunately, it wouldn't work with my new Race ECM. It kept disconnecting. I am hoping to receive another Race ECM from DaveS.

Hmmm... Just reconfigured the port and tried again, now just getting an "ECM not responding" message. Guess I'll swap in the stock one see if that does anything. Hopefully it'll get it running again at least, I'm startin to get withdrawal. Gotta get new tires this month too, I swear, Rick James had a cheaper and less addictive habit!

Spork, it probably doesn't need to be said, but the key needs to be in the on position so that VDSTS can communicate with the ECM.
Also Yanks_tt, do you have the KeySpan adapter? Mine did the same thing until I finally found one.

For whatever it's worth..I had the same problem and talked to TechnoResearch Inc. and found out the reason my software won't talk with my ECU is because they packaged a bunch of their kits wrong. They have a Harley cable, which hooks up just like the Buell, but isn't set up to work with one. They knew about the problem, and sent me a new kit. "Spork"....yours sounds like it's the same as mine...call them.

I bought my VDSTS last year, and had problems with it since. I finally had the bright idea to call Techno 2 months ago, and was told to try downloading the newest version of software. I did that and haven't had a problem since! I've connected with my bike 3 out of the last 3 times on the first.

It's worth a try and it's free.

I had some communication issues with my VDSTS setup and a 10-minute walkthrough with one of the Technoresearch software engineers had me delete the configuration folder on my hard drive so that the software would create a new one. Presto! Problem solved. When I use VDSTS, I almost always delete that folder first thing just to avoid that issue. Apparently, the data stored for your ECM can become corrupted and affect connectivity.

Yes, downloading the newer version did wonders for my connection woes - although I am using DB9 (no adapter)
