Buell racers to compete at Laguna Formula Xtreme round EAST TROY, WIS. (June 29, 2006) – Buell Motorcycle Company announced today that three race teams will enter the Formula Xtreme class during Round 7 of the 2006 AMA Superbike Championship July 21-24 at Laguna Seca in Monterey, Calif. The AMA races are being held in conjunction with the Red Bull U.S. Grand Prix. Warr’s of London Harley-Davidson/Buell (Great Britain), with the support of Buell Motorcycle Company, will enter veteran Irish racer and MotoGP star Jeremy McWilliams aboard an XBRR. McWilliams raced an XBRR at the Daytona and Infineon AMA rounds earlier this season. Classic H-D/Buell–Millville H-D/Buell–Innovative Motorcycle Research rider Mike Hale will also contest the Formula Xtreme round at Laguna Seca on an XBRR. Hale has recovered from injuries sustained in a testing accident in May and will be racing the XBRR for the first time at an AMA Formula Xtreme event. H-D/Buell of Vallejo has also entered the AMA Formula Xtreme class at Laguna Seca with AFM veteran Shawn Reilly aboard an XB12R. “We think it’s great that the AMA added the Formula Xtreme race to the Laguna weekend schedule. We’re looking forward to showing the world how exciting and diverse this class has become,” said Chairman and Chief Technical Officer Erik Buell. Both teams racing XBRR models are receiving support from Pirelli Tires, Sentry Insurance, Harley-Davidson Financial Services, Screamin’ Eagle SYN3 Synthetic Motorcycle Lubricant, and Harley-Davidson Visa. The Buell XBRR is a limited-edition production racing motorcycle based on the Firebolt XB12R, which is reworked at the factory into the XBRR for use in closed-course competition. It offers private racers a professional-level, race-ready, production-based platform. Buell Motorcycle Company, a subsidiary of Harley-Davidson, Inc., produces sport motorcycles, motorcycle parts, accessories and apparel. Cuell! I can't wait! BTW, couldn't someone come up with a spare XBRR for H-D/Buell of Vallejo? Geez, it would seem like that someone would need some "testing" done on their bike before they race it, or something. The XBRR is so much more reliable engine wise than a hogged -out, hopped-up Sporty, and I would hate to see any more press about "issues". I have a couple of hopped up Sporty motors (I have over $7,000 in each...not counting the cases, primaries, trannies) and I wouldn't run either one at a racetrack any more...not even a track day. They make a lot better street motors than race. Somebody? Anybody? jimidan |

Great news about McWilliams and Hale!!! It's a shame that Trev Deely's and Hals will not be able to participate. This is the premiere weekend for Road Racing, not Daytona. (Message edited by JScott on June 30, 2006) |

I notice no mention of Hal's H-D. Are they running a joint team with Warr's again? |

Unfortunately, no one does want any more testing done, since the problems seem to be sorted now. Now they just want their bikes! I believe Hal's has pulled out from racing FX this year; they may be back next year. They are busy with Tom Bradford on his Buell in NHRA; I believe he qualified number one at the last event, too! Deeley's does have their bikes (actually two), but they are busy with a race in Canada. Jeremy will be on a XBRR that actually is a factory/dealer effort for the FIRST time (despite the hot air some blow around). That is why he is shown now as being entered that way. Laguna was lobbed in at the last minute, and was considered too important to miss, since only a couple of dealer teams were able to enter (entries were restricted to only riders who have points in FX already) and one doesn't have an XBRR yet. |

This will be one to watch, absolutely! This is DVR material right here, as I think the XBRR is now in a prime position to drop the jaws of the naysayers! I'll be flying the Buell flag that day! Also, word around the campfire is that we'll be getting our XBRR sometime in July. Wait a minute, it is July! I gotta camp out at the dealership, just in case they got our drop-off hours wrong!

As an ex-privateer racer, my perspective is that a finish in the top five it would be fantastic. Remember, this is a small company that makes about 10,000 units (?) per year up against the Japanese giants' factory teams. Jeremy only has a few hours on the bikes too, vs. hundreds of hours that the factory giants' riders have on theirs. And this will be the first time at Laguna for the XBRR and the Buell teams. So, don't take one bite of crow if there are Buells in the top ten. It ain't easy! |

(July 3, 2006) – Buell Motorcycle Company is extending a special invitation to active Buell racers for reduced-cost access to a track day hosted by Buell dealers at Barber Motorsports Park in Birmingham, Ala., on July 8-9. Buell racers with active competition licenses from any racing organization will receive a discounted entry rate of $50 per day for the event, coordinated by Private Track Time and hosted by area Buell dealers. The track day at Barber is probably related to the new bike intro at Laguna Seca. Jim |

Why would a track day at Barber be related to Laguna? |

If I were Erik Buell, and I were going to introduce new models at Laguna Seca, I would want to introduce them to riders, and racers at as many tracks as soon as possible. Having a track day with such a model at Barber makes a lot of sense to me. Mid-Ohio would make sense also.

Erik may want to, but the Mothership has always been notoriously tightlipped about new product introduction. Even the dealers don't know what they can order til the Friday of the weekend of Summer Dealer Meeting. and that, is the weekend of July 15th. so, nothing will be revealed, and nothing will be shown, until it comes on stage at the dealer show in san diego - and the whole world finds out at the same time because the content is loaded onto the H-D and Buell websites then as well. Unfortunately, no testing, prototyping, etc. at any public venue or trackday prior to this. just a really nice offer for Buell racers if they can juggle their schedules to get to Barber this weekend. This trackday has been on the books all year and was not booked recently. The last minute offer is to tempt racers with a smokin' hot deal at $50 a day (which it definitely is, regular admission to this track for a Buell owner is $175 a day, and competitive bikes $200 a day!) |

Do you know what? I didn't read the track day date correctly. I thought it would be after Laguna and not before. I saw the August date, and not the July 8-9th date. Oh well, with that mistake on my part, I learned a few more date points. Thanks! (Message edited by jima4media on July 04, 2006) |

Before all the finger pointing starts, our bike was a XB9 when it started life. It ran last year as a 1210-cc AFM Formula 4 and uses a GSXR front end. When we built it to race AFM out here on the West Coast, that collection of fork and brake parts were available at the track. It is in process of becoming a 1350-cc, 3.625 short stroke motor. Our reason to run FX at Laguna is because Shawn has points and we were not too happy with our Sears Point finish. The following week Shawn was faster on our bike in Open Twins and we believe that at the club level a short stroke XB can win in that class. So if anyone interested, we have a new V-Rod Destroyer Drag Bike for sale and when it goes we will look to get a RR and when we do we will run the Buell front end. The last thing I want to say is that as always Henry Duga and his Race Department have helped us get ready for this race. There were a lot of changes between a 120 hp 1210 and this 140+ hp 1350 and Sam and I could not have gotten it done without their support. That help was not because we bought one of the new bikes, but because they know we believe in Buell. Since we started we have always Raced What We Sold and Sold What We Raced.... So Thanks Again Henry. ... Terry |
