I have an 03 XB9R that I bought last year brand new from the Dealership. I ride it pretty regularly, it's for fun in the mountains as well as a daily commuter. (BTW This is near/in Denver, CO) I had noticed a slight tapping noise one week, and by the next, it had turned into a really LOUD and seemingly random tapping noise (think "ting ta ting ting") This happend for sure when I was at about a consistant 2000RPM going around a slight bend in the road. The power and everything else seemed to be fine. I got it into the garage and put the door down while I went inside for a few minutes to take all of my gear off. When I came back out to the garage it absolutely REEKED of gas fumes - so I opened the garage door to let them dissipate. About 15 min - 30 min later I checked my oil, and when I pulled out the dipstick the smell of gas was even worse. The oil didn't smell burned or anything, it just stank of gas. I brought it into the dealership (with the help of a couple guys from our awesome BRAG group) to have them take a look. When I had talked with some buddies about the problem they had mentioned that it could be the fuel injector, so I mentioned this to the tech. The tech called me two days ago and said that the bike was running fine, that he checked the oil and there was a little bit of gas in there...but that it was normal for these bikes to have gas in the oil...??? That just doesn't sound right to me. He also said that the TPS seemed to be never set when they had put the race kit on the bike, that the idle was set up wrong and that the spark plugs were going foul. I've replaced the spark plugs on that bike twice in the past year.. .what would make that happen? Also, he mentioned that he cleaned the plugs and then something to do with the end of them was loose and needed to be tightened - (he was mumbling also so I really had a hard time making this part out) and that something that the plugs go into was loose and it's not that way with "jap" bikes - frankly I have no idea what he was talking about at this point. If anyone has an idea, please let me know. Anyway he basically said that nothing serious was wrong with it and the random tapping noise that I've never heard before was normal as well - is this guy smoking crack or am I?? |

A significant amount of gasoline in the oil, enough to cause it to reak of gasoline, is not normal nor acceptable. Running too cold and/or too rich will foul the plugs. Random tapping could easily be nothing, probably normal valvetrain noise which changes with differing engine temperatures. The tapping noise might have been from the primary chain. Under power, 2000 rpm is too slow of an engine speed for your XB9. Try to keep the revs up above 2500 or even better, 3000 rpm. |

Thanks Blake! I just got my bike back, basically the tech said that the TPS was way off (but why would that be?) so that was why I had all of those other problems. I'm really glad it isn't anything more, but I will keep my ears open for that random tapping noise - hopefully it was just a fluke! Thanks again! |
