Someone on another board said a Uly with factory bags was too wide to lane split. How wide is that sucker with factory bags? How wide are the bags? Just got back from a demo ride. We have a new leader in the new bike hunt. |

I'm not going out to the garage to measure the width of my Uly with the bags on, but you could probably fit as much in the bags as you could in a small U-Haul box truck. |

O.K., so I lied. The bags measure 40" wide, installed on the bike. |

I am a lane splittin' commuter and I generally remove the bags for daily rides. That said, my bar-ends hit before the bags. You can prolly imagine how I know that. fubar |

Who said it was too wide for splitting? Give me a break. I split with mine all the time. Obviously you do need to consider your gaps, but honestly... Jim in Santa Barbara |

Sorry Jim, must disagree, you need a big gap for this sucker, wider than the bars! http://www.brat.info/buell/ |

You definitely can split lanes with the bags on, but you have to be careful. I have done it on a test ride, not even knowing the bike that well. That's the case on any bike with real luggage, anyhow. If I get one, I would probably have the bags off most of the time and leave the top box on. Then toss the bags on when I went on long trips. |

Okay, so how wide are the bags? 10"? 6"? The local actual cares about selling a bike is out of bags. |

Well, to each his own. I will continue to split with bags on. Obviously I do pay attention to the gaps as I am sure we all do. Jim in Santa Barbara |

The only problem I ever had on my BMW was the reaction of skinny tires on Botts-dots, the Krauser/Motobags are narrower than the mirrors on really narrow S-bars. My Uly with the bags on had me wondering though. Some low speed splitting in city traffic for a few days demonstrated how accurately the wide bar and fat tires could negotiate the cages. I found that the bigger problem is that wide and high bar and its mirrors. Since every mom in my area apparently drives an SUV I've found that their mirrors are a serious concern. Freeways are no problem but at stoplights if there are two of the same model sitting parallel I sometimes gotta hold back! |

I think it depends on where yer splittin'. There are parts of the 101 around LA where the lanes get MIGHTY narrow and the Yuppie and Soccer Mom transports get WIDE. OTOH, there are parts of the I5 where I swear I could split lanes with a garbage truck. -Saro |
