With my Buell, that is! I took this past Tuesday, while I was in Vancouver, BC, to attend a Ducati demo ride. I rode four different bikes--the Sport 1000, 749, ST3, and Multistrada 620 (which was a gas, but in a completely different category, so doesn't really count). I find my XB9R (with Helibars) to be more comfortable than the ST3, as exciting as the 749 (at least on the street), and as "cool" as the Sport 1000. In short, the demo ride just re-affirmed my belief that I chose the right bike for me when I bought my Buell. |

"I find my XB9R (with Helibars) to be more comfortable than the ST3, as exciting as the 749 (at least on the street), and as "cool" as the Sport 1000" I whole-heartedly agree !!! A good friend recently bought an '06 ST3 and I was VERY impressed by it's looks and features. I got the "bug" to look into a Duc, so I rode the ST-3, (2) Monsters and 800 & 1000 SS models. NONE are enough MC to make me trade my XB12s - the ST-3 has more wind protection, but feels bigger and heavier. Neither Monster felt as nimble or had anymore power than my XB, and both SS models seemed to be more like "vintage" early 90's bikes. I'm sure there's several Ducs that will outperform my Buell, but models like the S4RS, 749R and 999 series are $5000 plus higher than the XB. No Duc in my future. Almost forgot - went riding w/ the ST-3 this morning and the XB absolutely KILLS the Duc on 5 miles of nice twisties that both of us know pretty well. Granted the ST is a "sport tourer", but it weighs 450 dry, the motor makes 100+HP and has 70 some ft lbs of torque. The XB is faster everywhere, especially off the corners and under braking. E |

I did a Duc demo day a couple months ago. I was considering a Monster while I was shopping last year and decided against it because of the cost of parts and extra maintenance. After the demo ride I'm glad I picked my XB. The Monsters were kind of lame. Didn't really get what the big deal was about Ducs. However I also took out a 999 and saw the light. That thing was SWEET! If I did 6k or less miles a year I'd probably trade the xb for one. |

Massimo Tamborini (sp?) Knows how to design a bike. The 916-998 series is the second sexiest Italian bike ever built. The MV Augusta f4 is number one, and he penned that one too... Of course that's just my opinion. |

I love both the bikes in Pwnzor's pic and I miss my red Firebolt. Having spent some time now on the 749R (with race exhaust/ecm) I would have to say the Duc is pretty exciting, but has some serious drawbacks to road use. First the clutch absolutely sucks which is aggrevated further by waay too tall gearing (even WSIR racers gear them down). Second it's a torture rack to ride on long rides. Third it wants to be hammered and that encourages taking risks on the road. Fourth it's even hotter than the XB on hot days in traffic (thankfully I already have children). Once you are really pushing it though, it's hard to beat and on a track it's pure heaven. To be honest though, I wish Buell would just up the ante and put out a street legal XB with the Ohlins and more HP. That would have me thinking of selling the Duc and getting another XB. |

The 916 is slightly lower geared than stock. She pulls about 153mph flat out on a good day. Yes the 48mm Termi's and chip help but the biggest gain in keeping up with 10 year younger superbikes comes from the Techtronics quick shifter. That is one wonderful piece of kit. Never mind what it does for performance \ acceleration, it's what you feel when it does it that really impresses. The expression 'pulls your arms out of their sockets' has more meaning than just words. Holding the throttle wide full open and going up through all the gears by just moving your left foot up is total speed euphoria. Rocket |
