Harley/Buell service is alot to be desired. My 04 XB12R has had a hesitation off idle since I purchased it from the dealer. It has been in the shop to be fixed for the hesitation issue 3 differrent times and has not come out corrected. It just keeps getting worse. So here I go and hopefully I will be able to fix the situation myself. The conclusion I have come up with is that the intake has an air leak and the rubber seals on the intake need replaced.

It's back together and the engine runs smoother at idle and starts easier. The power on acceleration is smoother and not as pipey. Went for a short ride and no hesitation from taking off from stop signs. Keith |

Congratulations. Sometimes the test equipment does not always reveal the technically simple problems like intake and vacuum leaks. They'll go off chasing sensors and such for days when all it might be is a cracked vacuum line or leaking seal. Had a diagnosis on a Ford pickup I used to have for over $1,000 in needed parts, turned out to be just a loose carb and a leaking vacuum line and one exposed wire and cost me all of less than 50 cents to fix it. You might or might not want to go back to the dealership and talk to the service manager there and calmly explain how in three trips they could not correct the problem and tell them what you did to correct it. Best case is that they take your information with good intentions and use it to better their service for the next Buell owner who comes in. It is satisfying though to fix it yourself, isn't it. |

Had the bike out today riding in stop and go traffic, no hesitation. |

This is one of the most common problems for H-D Buell since they started using this sealing system. Install them carefully and with a liberal coating of WD-40, and you'll be fine. |

I put a light coating of wheel bearing grease on the seals, hoping it will withstand the engine temps and keep the seals soft. The seals I removed were locked onto the intake manifold, not allowing it to seal, causing an air leak, high idle or hesitation. Having issues prior to replacing seals, so I removed the race ECU and reinstalled stock one. After replacing the seals the engine started and ran better. It had a softer, smoother feel with stock ECU. Today, I reinstalled the race ECU. The power is crisp, smooth and pulls harder. Had issues with pinging when race ECU was installed prior to replacing seals. No pinging today. Now on accelleration, front end carries in second gear. |

A note; Never, never, ever use brake cleaner, carb & choke cleaner, etc. to check for intake seal leaks. These chemicals tend to harden the seals and make them leak. Use WD-40, it changes the idle characteristics if there's a leak, and doesn't deteriorate the seals if there's not. |

The weather was warmer today and the dredded pinging came back. Cooler weather no issues, warmer weather, fan is on more and pinging with the race ECU. Removed race ECU, bike runs great. Fan not coming on and no pinging. Time to do some research on what is available for custom tuning. |

Mine is in for a miss at 3000 RPM but yeah, mine does the same thing even a backfire accelerating from a stop. Hmmm... Wonder if they carry those seals? You have a part number? |

Weather has been 80+ and the bike has been running well. I cleaned up shop and threw out the package with part number, but I purchase mine at the local Harley shop. Keith |

would bad intake seals cause it to misfire when it gets wet out? |

My Buell is in the shop for a missing at about 3000 RPM, they are claiming that the throttle body is the problem, we will see, at least the bike is under warranty, if that isn't it then the dealer just ate the 800 dollar mistake. They replace the seals at the same time. 3 times in and still not fixed. |
