Buellers, I was checking out my '05 XB9SX last night and noticed something. It looks like my front motor mount is loose. Is it? Here's a view from the right side.  It's a full 1/4" off.  I put a 5/8" hex in it to see if I could turn it and I couldn't. Is this normal or do I need to get it serviced? Or is there an easy way to tighten it? Sorry for the picture quality. Well, the pictures are too poor to see if the rubber has gone bad, but it is indeed normal for the lower metal of the isolator to be roughly 1/4" from the bottom of the frame. Think about it...it's supposed to isolate motor vibrations from the frame - you can't have the metal touching!  | ||

Rubber is in tact. You say the lower metal of the isolator should be 1/4" from the bottom of the frame, but where is the rubber supposed to be (on the frame or hangin with the lower metal of the isolator)? Again, sorry about the pics. I have to REALLY dumb them down to get them to upload. The original pictures are perfect, I promise. | ||

looks correct to me. remember the motor "floats" on the uni-planar mounts. If you use something like MS Office picture manager you can compress the pics so they'll upload. (Message edited by diablobrian on June 27, 2006) | ||

Brian's right -- the best way to tell if it's failed is if the mount is resting on the head of the bolt. | ||

As long as the rubber isn't noticeably dry-rotted or torn, and the metal parts aren't touching, you're good. I replaced mine last year when I put my new header on 'just because'. The rubber was showing some small cracks (after about 3 years and 18K miles) and I figured what the hell, since I already had a bunch of parts off the bike. It's quite simple to do and the assembly (triangle motor mount with isolator pre-installed) wasn't too expensive, either. | ||

Regarding the front isolator on my 06' XB9SX; the rubber fitting seems to be upside down, when compared to the pictures in the manuals. Basically, the base of rubber fitting is on the top of the isolator bolt and the stem of the rubber fitting is on the bottom portion. I was at Liberty Buell the other day and I saw that the 06' models that they had on the floor had the same setup as on my bike. Does anyone know why the 06' models have a different set up for the rubber fitting on the front isolator bolt? | ||

i'm on my second front isolator... wish mine looked that good! new one is on its way out again, torn at the top almost immediately. the best way to tell if it's failed is if the mount is resting on the head of the bolt exactly, and you'll feel vibes from the contact. | ||

There is an updated part for the front isolator. The 06' part is different than the 04' and some of the 05' I have looked at. |
