im notlooking to compete with anything else this is more like building a rat rod i want mean and ugly power...what would happen if i ran straight pipes...is that going to mess things up in a big way..what about some kind of head work...like the ole port and polish thing maybe new valves and rockers ..like just pulling the cylnders off and having them breathed on a little...sorry to the original poster i kind of turned this into something else....but i am curious how to get the biggest bang out of my bike for something that dosent amount to a truckload of cash...so far it looks like i might be going for some kind of big bore kit....if i wanted an R-1 id just ride the one i got instead of selling it...someday il find a jap bike i want to keep and turn into a street fighter but il always have my mean bitch too....i just wanna scare women and small children ...thats not too much to ask eh. |

Since you're not an R-1 fan, you might want to consider other V-Twins. I bought a '97 Suzuki TL 1000S on Ebay for $3500. bucks. It came with V & H headers, K & N, all the whistles & bells. It scares women, children and even ME sometimes. It's WAY faster than my Buell and hasn't broken ANYTHING in 4 years! The cubic inch philosophy is only good when comparing equal engine designs. ie. A 1.4 liter Harley will be faster than a 1 liter Harley, but still not as fast as a DOHC 1000. (Message edited by 71sportster on June 17, 2006) |

Molly, There are lots of comapanies offering the stuff needed to improve the RWP and No matter how much cash you throw at the Buell it will still lose it's ass in a speed contest with an R-1 anywhere but the really tight stuff. Spend the cash on suspension and a few track days. My R-1 riding buddy thought my bike was a 12R for a couple of months. You should have seen his face when I said it was 9R..... Priceless. You can only use so much on the street without carving your way to a coffin. The Buell is very capable at everything but total asshat speeds. |

Forgive me if I am wrong, but top speed is a factor of engine RPM, final drive ratio, and wheel and tire circumference. Horsepower should have nothing to do with it, only how quickly you could get to that top speed. |

yeah 71 ive been kinda lookin for a tl....its not that im not an R-1 fan its a damn fine piece of machinery...just not practical for every day 4 miles to work and tearing up the strip....and it was bought to make a profit from so i can fund whatever wild hair i get up my tail pipe...its actualy hard to find a totaled TL...now if u want a wrecked gixxer they are everywhere hahahaha....i appreciate all the intput so far...ya'll know way more about my bikes motor than i do....im pretty good at puttin new plastic on a bike and fixing a few odds and ends but hardcore motor work is beyond me....i am lookin foward to pulling the heads off my bike and seeing whats in there...like i said before i just want to awaken the beast a little more....by the way i am lookin for new tires im sure theres like a million posts about that but why not stir the ole pot a little more....i need the best performance tires i can find money no object..is it just me or do the stock XB tires blow mine have over 3000 on em and im kind of afraid to really lean over hard and trust them...i like the track day thing im dying to go to one.... |

top speed is a factor of engine RPM, final drive ratio, and wheel and tire circumference. Horsepower should have nothing to do with it, only how quickly you could get to that top speed. That would be true if not for air resistance. However air resistance increases as a square of increase in speed -so more and more power is required the faster you go. This is why you cannot gear a pedal bicycle to go 300kph. |

How do you overcome aerodynamic drag if not for HP? |

i have a garmin hand held gps that will display top speed attained.on my 12s it showed 133.8mph bouncing off the limiter.speedo was showing over 140.kinda hard to hang on at that speed without any fairing but wanted to see what she had. |

I've been to 115 indicated onmy XB12Ss and beat the hell out of me, I need an XB12R LONG, or I can just buy an R front end. |

Aerodynamic drag on an under powered bike would cause the engine to not be able to rev up to it's RPM limit. There is a rigid connection (more or less) between the crank shaft, transmission, and the rear wheel. The point that I was trying to make, is that with the stock rear ratios, you may not hit that 300kph mark with out either changing the gears or making the engine spin faster, no matter how much horsepower you have. I may be wrong though, I didn't do the math to see if a XB is capable of that theoretical topspeed. |

If it is true that a jockeyesque rider in a tight tuck on a 109 RWHP repliracer cam do around 160 mph, then a 95 RWHP XB12R with optimum gearing might be able to make 153 mph. That is of course assuming all else is equal, which it isn't. Full fairings for repliracers for instance. Not sure of the accuracy of the top speed numbers reported in Cycle World either, but they seem within reason. Peak speed increases proportional to the cube root of HP. |

i think street fighters are finaly getting a little bit of the respect they deserve in this country because for the most part going 150 miles an hour isnt really an option for most of us...maybe once or twice just to see what its like...but i sure as hell dont spend much time with my speedo pegged for me its more like a battle everyday just gettin around....the europeans have been the smart ones for a while now...u find a cheap wrecked bike tear all the crap off it and prepare for the war....big horsepower....no extra crap...the streets are mean ur bike should be too...now if i could just find a full roll cage id be crappin in tall cotton hahahaha. |

There are full cages for XBs. Powers makes one. The one pictured is gold, but I think they come black. http://www.powersbikeworx.com/CrashBars.html |

Great performance tires......I LOVE my Pirelli Diablo Corsas. Not great for slabbing it, too soft, not great or rain, rain channels too small, but they give me great confidence in the corners, great feedback, and stick like glue. |
