Wow , First time I heard of a starter gone bad, 31390-91c Starter Solenoid repair kit= 31603-91 and you can buy other related parts for them, By looking at that part number I think its the same from 1991 and up, Maybe brush are bad, I doubt you need to buy a new one and just repair what ya got.. Sportsters MAY be the same hope this helps ya... |

Started off a replace voltage regulator. 300$ no warranty cuz it was a sunday. Sent the bill to HD they are gonna cover it. Worked fine for a day or 2. Go to start bike n get awful clicking of death sound. Bring it back to the dealer. Back of headlight assembly is burnt n melted. NOT covered under warranty. Replaced headlight assembly n leave dealer.(98$!) Stop for gas less than a mile away and bike wont start awful clicking of death sound again. Bring it back as tech is going to lunch. He says tell other tech to reset AFV n that should fix it. Other tech is on lunch so I wait for an hour. Orig tech comes back n blabla listens n says oh yeah thats a bad starter,we don't have any in stock but we'll order one you can leave the bike here it should only be a few days.(covered under warranty) That was Two mondays ago. Sounds more like a charging plm. than starter... Also I wd. double guess the tech. at the dealer on it being a starter Get your battery LOAD tested and check to see if its throwing out a charge of over 13.7 to 14 volts or more when you give it a shot of gas, after the battery has been charged up first... If you replaced your regulator, perhaps it took out the stator or the other way around...IS your battery original?? If your battery cables are just abit loose, seen this happened many times it will just click as you are saying... |

The reg. was spiking up to 17 volts and blowing my headlights. The battery holds a good charge n is new. I replaced it less than a week before I had the regulator replaced. |

Put a 12v charger on it and see if the starter will work, if so then check out your battery and charging system, maybe with somebody you can trust.........Charlie |

Little over 13k miles(300ish overdue for 10k service) Could have gotten it started at the dealer n rode it home. But since they said the starter is fried I figured why the hell would I take it home, FIX IT! n like I said that was 2 mondays ago. |
