Polish it up, it is natural stainless.

My old '04 XB9R didn't have any coating on the headers but my '06 XB12R definitely does (and it is scratched in one place). I'd venture to say it's some kind of heat resistant paint.

Question on 2006 headers if stainless steel or not. Magnets generally do not stick to stainless steel. A magnet will STICK to the 2006 headers and I think their is some kind of paint on them.

mags will stick to certain types of stainless, at least they do at the shop i work at....maybe its the amounts of other material in cheaper stainless...we machine all different types of SS.

So maybe the 2006 headers are made of a lower grade SS and are then painted.

Dude... He was asking about how to restore the original finish... not get a different finish...

In any case... I'm not sure there's a "plating" on it as such. Anony could probably answer that though. I've heard that mother's metal cleaner works well, and the pipes will return to their gold color fairly quickly.

Get em hot. Scrape off anything you can. Sand them wet, when cool, with 300/600/1200 . Polish with Eagle One or Mothers.

Can't do that either. Sanding is a NO...NO on 06 headers unless you don't mind the bead blast texture that is on it from the factory being sanded off.
