Hey all, My bike has been down since December and Im just starting the trouble shooting. She wont turn over, The Starter Doesn't seem to be turning at all and she won't even push start. I replaced the starter relay and main circuit breaker. The groud cable is pretty well frozen in place and Im having issues taking it off to clean the contacts. The battery is good, good amps and charge. The lights are coming on. The nuetral light comes on in nuetral and turns off when in gear. I recenty replaced the handlebars with a powder coated set (after I laid it over last summer.) Im at a loss, please help. Josh |

You have a push-on type electrical connector on your starter, it is almost under the starter and is very easy to disloge while trying to fiddle with your connections. It can get lost in the morass of electrical connections under your starter. If it is pulled loose the lights may work but you won't be able to start. |

Ahh, I'll re-assemble my starter and clean the contacts including the one mentioned this morning. Its odd that that connector would stop it from turning over at all. |

Alright cleaned up my starter re-installed it and still no dice. The starter Solenoid seems to be functioning but the starter isn't spinning. I got it to spin once but only the once, after that the solenoid just clicked each time I pushed the button. I did note while I had the solenoid apart that the too copper points inside were pretty badly pitted. Im gonna take the starter of and see how much it would cost to have my local dealership test it out. I did the solenoid tests outlined in the manual and it passed with flying colors so Im once again at a lose. Josh (Message edited by drfuyutsuki on June 06, 2006) |

Alright, The dealership confirmed the Solenoid is functioning properly. The starter will run ocasionally, I have replaced the starter relay and main circuit breaker with no improvement. Im going to run the wiring next, any tips on doing the draw test? |

The dealership confirmed the solenoid is okay, but did they confirm that the starter motor itself is okay? |

They couldnt test the "starter cluth" due to not having the proper equipment. Im going to attempt to bypass the relay circuitry to test the starter, and check all applicable wiring for continuity. My current thought is either I have a stretched/broken wire somewhere or Im am generating an excess of energy somewhere and activating the main circuit breaker. Josh |

It's a long shot and may not at all be pertinent to your situation, but I had a starting issue on my '98 S3 when I first bought it. Turned out to be the ring connector on the power wire between the main relay and the starter motor. That wire was stretched pretty taut between where it exited the wiring harness and where it's bolted to the starter motor. That strain pulled/broke the wire inside the ring connector on the starter motor. Since the break was "inside" the connector it was not readily visible until some yanking on wire pulled it loose. It's a good size wire, black IIRC, and it was fixed by loosening the wire a bit from the harness (splitting the loom up a bit) and crimping on a new ring connector. Actually I initially fixed it roadside with a bit of solid copper wire and a wire nut, but the final fix was as described. Just a thought. Henrik |

I don't remember this problem on Buells specifically, but somewhere in the late 90's HD had a lot of Sportsters with no-start due to a broken wire/terminal between two of the four circuit breakers. Should be white and only about 4 inches long-visual and digital examination should prove it out. |

Thanks for the input Henrick and Pressure. I haven't had a chance to shoot the wires but I'll check then out. I had thought about soldering the connectors to ensure the connections perhaps I'll do it know rather then pass it over. Josh |

Also check the wires to the kill switch-they're easy to pinch/pull when messing with the handlebar controls. |

Well Finally found my problem. Turns out I was over looking the relay next to my battery box. Nice $10 fix to a months long problem. Thanks for the help. Josh |
