hi! after my first track day - where i was promoted - i am wondering how i can safely (well, i am not totally *that* safely-oiented) - remove the rev limiter on my 05 xb12r. i have already crashed bike twice & it has been *written off*, so i have not many worries abt the warranty implications. it is basically my trackbike - tho still registered for street. looked briefly in *knowledge vault* but didn't find anything that answered my question. i have already swisscheesed the airbox & the *lip* above gascap .. this added some violence to locomotion, but i want to not bounce off the limiter so much in the twisty sections of our local track. i found it impossible to make use of 3rd gear in the twisty parts - keeping a 05 gsx-r750 & ducati 999 behind me - using just 1st & 2nd gears, but right on the ragged edge. i love the pops & farts of the overloaded motor, but want a little more revs righ now, before i get overbored jugs & lightened crank & other racer bits. any help truly appreciated. |

You won't be able to alter the rev limit unless you can get hold of the 'racer only' ECU from Buell, or get someone like MOTEC to make a new system for you. Even then, raising the rev ceiling on a standard XB12 motor is likely to end in a broken motor. If you are going to raise the rev limit get a balanced and lightened crank first. It sounds to me like you need better gearing optins not a higher rev limit. Andrews do a close ratio gear set for the XB, or you could consider getting rid of the original belt drive and fitting a chain conversion. This will let you alter the final drive ratio to your heart's content. Another alternative would be to change the primary chain and engine sprocket for an XB9 item. This will give you lower overall gearing, so you could attack the twisty sections in 3rd as you want to rather than 1st or 2nd. |

you could also put on a XB9 ecm and tune it with a direct link |

I have been TORTURING a BIG sportster motor for several years, it has a 4.3125 inch stroke and spends a lot of time bouncing off the 7000 rpm limiter. it has proven quite durable. |

Chain Drive. Maybee not the least expensive in the short time, but definately cheaper than a blown motor. |

XB9 ECM w/ direct-link tuning. Don't go past about 7200 much . |

i am liking the chain conversion - but the chain tension adjuster mod has me searching for the bones to fund it - but otherwise seems the smart move. i have wrecked my bike, so i can't sell it & am totally enamored w/ track & having the funds right now wld get a new r6 or 03-present xz-6rr (for racing) or zx-6r (for track days) .. i am definintely going racing, so i need to think & plan along those lines. thanks for the input .. its a difficult decision - only coz of $$$$ - & simple, smart solutions are my best bet right now. pauly. |
