Took the Buell to the dragstrip last night for the first time. After a disappointing evening, the best pass I could muster was a 12.6 @ 108 mph with a 2.01 60'. Having a hard time lauching the torque monster, when I tried to lauch slipping the clutch from 4000 rpm on the overly prepped side of the track it resulted in a 12 o'clock and then after setting it back down and getting back on the gas it 12'd again. Slipping the clutch from 2500 rpm was where I stayed. My SV650 ran 12.2 @ 109 mph with a 1.9 60'. Thirty more horsepower and double the torque and no more speed. Guess these bikes really are dedicated twisty carvers! Hopefully, since the bike is probably slightly lean with just my Jardine, after I add the race ecm and K&N it will be better. But my MPH indicates that it just doesn't have the power. Maybe a got a dud. |

Oh it has the power alright, it's just not a drag bike. If you were to put a wheelie bar on it, and get a proper drag racing launch, I'd bet it'd smoke the SV. But then if you wanted a drag bike you would have bought one. Dragging is fun, but not on a stock XB. Hope you had a good time playing at the track anyway! |

XB's have too short a wheelbase for drag racing. As you found out they stand straight up when launched hard. |

I'd say it's all in the launch, which is difficult on the XB. An XB12 should walk all over an SV650. |

Yes, I know it should be faster but MPH is an indicator of power. Even with a bad launch my trap speed still should have been higher, like 110-112. But I had a lot of fun, even when the 'Busa I was staged against went 8.1 @ 188 mph. (Message edited by Nasty73z on June 03, 2006) |

8.1 out of a Busa? Was it even street legal? Stock, with a compressed susension they still only crank out just below 10 seconds. Can't imagine the money he dumped into that things...what a waste. |

There were four 'Busas at the track, all had extended swingarms, air shifters, full exhaust, god knows what I couldn't see. The one that ran 8.1 had a turbo sticking out of it's fairing. All of them were running sub 9 second passes every time. Most were in the 8.50-8.90 range. Only one of them had race body work with no provisions for head/tail lights. |

I've seen street legal Busas on the Dyno making 185 RWHP with only minor Mods. Pipe, intake, PC III, Etc. |

I "raced" against an SV650 up in the twisties here in North Georgia, I dusted his ass. Now that may have been more rider than bike, but even on the straights his headlight got smaller and smaller, once back in the twisties I would lose him all together. I'm sure though had there been another rider on the SV the outcome may have been much different. |

Hey Shea - Have you ever had the chance to ride a nasty drag bike before? Believe me there are not a waste. It is by far one of the coolest machines I have ever ridden. These guys build these bikes for that reason to go fast straight. It was a gsxr 750 turbo air shifted, I only ran 10.50. But he was ripping off some high 9's. Drag bikes are fun, if I had enough money to have one I would but my 9s is plenty fun for now. |

horses for courses - XB's just aren't meant to be drag bikes. Consider also that the 'little' SV650 has a 56.7" wheelbase, vs 52" on an XB, yet weighs as much as lightning, and it starts to make more sense. FWIW, I demo'd the SV650 ( and DL 650 Strom) within days of demoing an XB - real world, there's no comparison, the XB eats them for breakfast, AND its more comfortable. you want a drag bike, Kamloops HD have a V-rod Destroyer for sale right now. that'll get your mojo going !! |

Your SV wasn't faster - you were faster on your SV. Its all what you are used to or can acclimate to - Get the rpms up there but use the clutch. The 12 o'clock stuff is from hamfisted clutch. "Feed" the clutch from 4-5k. If you are dragging then be prepared to use the clutch like you don't care if you burn it up. With the right left hand technique you can carry the front wheel at 12" for at least the first gear. I took a less experienced rider on an SV1000 and he got a pretty good launch, but the feeding of the clutch got me out in front because he was afraid of too many rpm's at launch. I reved it, but didn't put it all down at once. |

I used to post regularly on an SV650 site because I'm a fan of the bike, but as soon as the other members found out I rode a Buell, they became derisive and nasty. For some reason, most of them hated Buells. It was like they felt I was their natural enemy or something. I've never even encountered one in N. Georgia. Maybe they all hide when they see a Buell... |

I've taken all my bikes to the strip at one time or another, but I have no desire at all to take my Buell to the quarter mile. I'd probably wind up like Bozo up there. |

I get the same feeling here, because I have & ride several other bikes. Each & everyone has their own strong points AND weak points. Apparently you don't dare say ANYTHING negative about the bike whose site you're on?! |

I agree with the short wheelbase comments. It is just too touch to launch hard with 52" between the wheels. Take to the mountains instead. |

I owned an SV650 at one point. The bike had good potential, but suffered notably from cheap componentry, particularly in the suspension department. The XB sets itself apart in this regard. |

I had an 04 SV last year. I just bought it as a stop gap because I planned to get an I4 600. The SV is a great bike condidering it is built to a price. The best thing about it was that it helped convince me to move up to a Buell XB9S(which I had always liked) because I realized the Vtwin and upright riding position were really the way to go on the street, at least for me. The Buell is just so much cooler than the SV. It is clearly much torquier, I am not sure if it is actually faster overall, although the numbers say it should be. The race kit certainly helps. Who cares? I can tell that the Buell handles better, although I am still only starting to appreciate its potential. The SV would come a lot closer with upgraded suspension but it will never give the same kick that the Buell gives. The Buell is just a thoroughbred, like a Ferrari. Objective measures don't give the whole picture, if you are interested in those intangible qualities. |

Lets not forget this one important fact: Compared to an XB(R, S, SS, etc) other bikes are generally ugly. |

I raced BOTH the SV and the XB - same track, same day. The SV took almost $2000 to get an equivalent suspension. GSXR rear shock ($250) and GSXR front end ($1800). (I eventually put a Penske on the rear) The XB was down for almost a half year after I wadded it up in Novice racing - and started engine work - and of course, ran outta money in mid-project. When the bigger/higher-HP XB came back to the track - I was quicker around the track on the SV for a couple months because I had become used to how it handled. Even though the XB had almost 30 more HP, it took me 2 months to adjust to it. Once I got used to it again, there was no turning back, I became MUCH faster on the XB - ended up selling the SV (trust me, 2 racebikes is a wickedly expensive habit!) |
