2001 M2 w/1900 miles. When I shift gears (shift lever up) the lever is hard to shift and it's killing my foot. Is there an adjustment I can make? |

Hi Elmo, To say that the shifting goes like a knife through butter is exaggerated. However: Even without riding boots, with that special reinforcment piece at the base of your left toe, pain is absolute not normal. First thing I would do is to adjust the primary chain, and to fill the tranny with just enough (not too much) synthetic oil. (Not the cheap ass Diesel oil, like you said in your profile). (The very first thing is to buy a manual, no matter its exorbitant high price.) Hans |

take the shifter bolt out clean it and put some blue lock tight on it and torqe to service manual spec. Hopefully that takes care of it. Lube up the linkage afterwards. sounds like its binding somewhere. |

Change the primary oil to Mobil 1 75W90 gear oil or the HD screaming oil stuff. These bikes are sensitive to the type of oil in the tranny. Hard shifting can be a sign of a shift detent problem or a spring plate problem in the clutch. Both of these conditions would be unheard of in a bike with 1,900 miles. I just fixed my clutch and shift drum for both these problems at 17,500 miles. It's not hard but a lot of screws etc. Good Luck! |

Elmono, bring it by sometime this week. I live off Airline adn Cimmarron. I would be more than happy to have a look at it for ya... I just dont do exhaust studs...lol send a PM... I haven't run the stock shifter in several years, but I remember it being hard on the foot.Best I remember the X1 has a longer shifter than the M2 (more leverage) and they interchange.I use a Storz shifter(rev.patern)also a long shifter, works great for me.............Charlie |

Forgot to mention that I replaced the nylon bushing for the shifter with a bronze bushing to keep the free play low. Cheapest thing to ameliorate shifting strongly. Hans |

There was a recall on the shifter on these things. I had mine done years ago and it helped quite a bit. I think it merely consisted of a longer linkage as someone stated earlier. Check into it. It helped mine quite a bit. (Don't expect it to shift easy no matter what you do, short of trading it in on something Japanese) Chris |

I gotta say that the Baker smooth shift kit has resulted in shifting on my Buell that's actually better than either of my Honda's. With the exception of 3rd to 4th (that I will correct tonight) it's really nice. Better than my goldwing! |

Elmono, I had the same problem with my 2001 M2. It will free up more with more miles on it. I did put the Baker smooth shift kit in it also. I have 30k on it now and it shifts really easy. |
