What will cause a ’98 S1 Lightning to backfire??? It’s not very consistent. It will start and idle just fine, the when I roll on the throttle to launch, it will die out and pop. When cruising down the road, it will bog down and snap and crack, then smooth out. I thought maybe I had a bad batch of fuel, so I ran through a full tank, and no help. I’ve been running high octane fuel (93). I have also recently changed the plugs & wires, air filter, and all oils. Everything is stock, except the after market exhaust. Any help is appreciated. Thank you. |

"...recently changed plugs & wires..." I'm not trying to knock your mechanical skills, but that's where I'd look first. If that's not where the problem lies, check all the "standard" gremlins: sidestand safety switch, intake seals, tank vent. Lots of information in the Knowledge Vault. Good luck, let us hear what you find. rt |

A blocked, or slightly blocked slow jet could be it as well... |

When I rev the bike it sounds like its sucking air. Should I be able to hear that?? How do I check the intake seals?? Also, everyone says blocked slow jet makes them run lean. But shouldnt it be more consistent if its blocked? Can I hurt the bike by riding it to lean????? |

Sounds like an intermittent high voltage breakdown. See if you can borrow a known good coil. If a different coil works OK, then spring for a Screaming Eagle coil. |

Check for intake manifold seal air leakage by setting the bike at a fast idle, around 2000 rpm, and spraying contact cleaner or WD-40 or even a fine mist of water liberally all around each seal. If the idle changes noticably, you've found an air leak. Put your old wires back on and see if the problem remains? Check/change spark plugs? |

Could a leaky head gasket be the problem??? I sprayed starter fluid around the intake, and it definitely affected the idle. But ,I couldnt tell if it was pulling from the intake, or the front head gasket??????? I'm assuming to start with the intake, seems like an easier and less expensive job. |

Ok, I finally got it!!!! I cut that stupid kickstand safety switch off, and she purrs like a kitten. I did end up replacing the intake seals, and flushing the carb anyway. I figured it need it. Back to burning up the blacktop!!! Thanks for all your help!!! |
