One would think with all the belt trouble the 03 crowd has that HD/BMC would make sure people could get the parts needed to keep the bikes on the road. Bad enough I have to spend 500+ to fix Buells mistakes but Al at American Sport Bike, Glendale HD, Skip Fordyce HD and Quaid can't even get the parts to fix my ••••••• bike. Not like I ride a freaking Ducati! loyalty is earned, BMC gets nothing from me ever again. BTW anyone want to buy an 03 bolt 9r? | ||

So you put on 2,000 miles more than the belt was rated for and it breaks then you blame BMC? Well anyways you try calling Daves and see what he can do for you? | ||

Sik_s 2,000 more miles than rated for? You must have missed something before you posted that. Unless the 03 belts are only rated for 3,000 miles.............. I have not had a 03 belt last more than 5,000 miles yet. I am going on my third one. I want to deal with American Sport Bike due to him being only about 1.5 hours away. He is also going to do a TPS reset for me free! With C.S. like that I am compelled to give him the business. I think Daves is pretty cool though. Great guy, lots of help to everyone on this site. | ||

Skyguy, did you call a Buell dealer and ask them to order the belt for you? If so... what did they say? Anyway, if for some reason daves can't get it go to http://www.surdyke.com/hd/catalog.asp you can order anything by part number there... although if it isn't in stock it may take 2 weeks from the time you order it before it shows up at your door. | ||

Okay, I saw on your "problem list" in your profile that it said belt broken at 13k. Didn't see anything else about previous problems, and nothing was said in your original post about repeat problems. I guess your just venting, but it is kind of silly to complain that you can't get your parts from your favorite vendor. If you need the parts you can possibly get them from Daves or just wait for Al to get them. I agree that great C.S. should be rewarded also. Have all the belts that have broken been the '03 model? Or did you upgrade to the '06 and broke one of those too? | ||

Sik_s I am pretty bad about updating the profile stuff. And yes I am venting. Nothing is ever in stock at the usual stealerships. Al at asb seems pretty unhappy with his pulley supplier as well. No fault of American Sport Bike whatsoever. I had hoped that I could buy everything from Al but find the pulley elsewhere because I am real close to having no transportation. Oh well at least I will have my Pinzgauer back on the road and running in a couple of days. All 10 to 15mpg of her ): Yes all of the belts were 03 models and not the upgrade. I found badweb kinda late and the stealerships sold me 03 stuff without ever mentioning the need to upgrade. | ||

Just wondering, do you have the belt guards installed or removed, and have you ever crashed? I'm curious to why you keep breaking so many belts. | ||

I had the belt guards on for the first two. Off for the last one. Yes I low sided awhile back but it was gentle and everything is straight. I do ride it between 4000 and 5700 RPM a lot and tend to pull stupid hard on the exits (go in slow see thru the turn and wail on the exit). Almost all of my riding is in the mountains and I ride in all kinds of weather. This winter saw snow, ice and lots of rain. The wear I am seeing on the idler pulley looks like it got "sanded" down by road debris. In fact I am sitting here wondering if the idler pulley bearings might be fried. I am afraid to mess with the belt to check it before I have the new stuff in hand. I will post if they were fried when I take it apart. It looks like it is possible.......... | ||

I too wonder why the belts are not lasting...there has to be something simply not right. I got more than 18,000 miles out of mine before switching to the '06 belt with a kit from American Sport Bike. I just rolled over 25,000 miles with no problems at all. | ||

Perhaps the belt had some production issues? Some production runs were good, some bad? Heck if I know. The idler pulley was fine the last time I changed tires. I did pop the first one before my low side though so I am sure that had nothing to do with it. I did look at the belt tracking and it seems fine. Everything is where it belongs. | ||

Maybe someone with an '03 will chime in I believe the '03 idler pulley is also supposed to be replaced at 10k miles, not sure if you had yours done. Do you own the service manual. What torque do you put on the rear axle when you install it? Maybe the choppy throttle is contributing to the wear you are seeing. | ||

I would probably just do the '06 belt conversion and call it good. I will probably do mine around the end of the summer. I may be at about half the suggested change interval by that time. Maybe you can get together with another BadWebber to do the next change, just to have a second set of eyes. There has to be someone sorta close in CA? | ||

I did not change the idler pulley at 10,000. This may be my bad. Damm thing looked/worked great at 10,000 though. I may have to pay Al a few extra bucks to change out the stuff as I am afraid enough to ride 100+ miles there. Much less ride back. I am open to the possibility of this belt going south due to reason other than poor design. I still do not have a good explanation for the first two though. I would not be so damm upset if the dealer had told me about the upgrade the first two times. | ||

'03 idler pulley is also supposed to be replaced at 10k miles SM recommends changing the idler pulley at 15,000 miles along with the belt. Around $90 IIRC. | ||

11K on mine so far. All is well. Will convert to 06 soon. | ||

I got 19,000 from my stock '03 belt system. During the winter I installed the '04 belt conversion from American Sport Bike (I bought this before the '06 models came out). I've put another 3,000+ on it without any problems. |
