I want to buy a GPS system for the 9R. Any suggestions? I want something water proof, mountable in/around faring/handlebars, easy to detach and can use with gloves.

I would go with the Buell Quest Portable Navigation System, but buell.com says
"Fits '06 XB12X models" Any body running in on a 9R/12R?

Please Advise.

clearance around that front fairing is going to be an issue. top of the triple tree or a mount off of the mirror base forward of the fairing have crossed my mind.

The hard part is deciding which one to ride...

I've also thought of an auxilliary bar across the capped / un-used bar mirror mounts.

I recently purchased a Garmin GPSV from GPS city for under $200. I also bought the handle bar mount $25. I'm very happy with the set up. Although the print is small it is readable for over 40 eyes. I have a CityX and had to add a strip of extra rubber to make the mount fit on the small cross bar. It holds 16 meg and comes with Mapsource City Select free. Therefore, you can store two or three large cities on it Also has off road functions for trail riding. The standard car mount that comes with it should work on the triple clamp hopefully by the handlebar location. Look also on a Garmin site there are bunches of mounts

RAM mounts and a Garmin Quest would be a nice unit.

Buy a Garmin 76 map, it has very good major road coverage for the USA, and reasonable coverage for Canada. Batteries will last about 8 hours, they are waterproof, and they float!. Best thing, they're cheap!

The road atlas type GPS are cashing in on peoples want of having super detailed maps (i.e. expensive for what you get). I don't know about you, but I generally don't want to be looking at anything but the road when I'm in a traffic situation.

Depends what you want. If you want a reference tool that shows major roads, and still has the ablity to provide track back, create routes, etc the 76map is a good way to go. If you want turn by turn directions, etc you'll have to spend the $.

As far as mounting, on an R there's not much room. I have mounted quite a few by gluing some velcro on the back of the unit, and then mounting the other half (of the velcro)to whatever, tank, tank bag, etc. though I've never done it on an R. There are all sorts of "RAM" mounts that with some mods might be able to be adapted.

If you want some good software to go with your GPS take a look at Ozi Explorer. Great software and cheap. If you're right into it you can get a subscription to Google Earth and upload / download routes etc. to your GPS.

Best place to buy garmin - gpscentral.ca , they've got it all.

Good luck

I have my Streetpilot III on a bracket attached to my Buell tankbag. Works great and you detach the tankbag and the gps is with it.
I have the tankbag on my Uly for Homecoming, will get you pics if you want next week.
