Hi folks; Had a lowside last nite going about 80KPH soulda been minimal damage but the frame puck did F*CK all...the handlebar went right through the puck and put a fist sized dent in the frame. swingarm scratched up, subframe got lots of road rash, bars, lever, shifter bar end mirror all ground off. Seems to me to be a write-off, no? My insurance deductible is $1250 though so I need some opinions.... | ||

I had exactly the same thing - sounds like similar damage. I got new frame, new subframe, new swingarm, new rear wheel, new muffler, handlebar, controls mirror, pegs, and all the trimmings - cost about $5700 all told. Engine and tranny were not damaged. For my '05 Scg it was not a loss, so I fixed it. The killer was the two small metal plates I had installed - those two were like $1500 parts and about $20,000 labor with installation - one in my wrist and one on my collar bone... | ||

Sorry I should have mentioned that - thx for the concern. I am fine I was in my full leathers - just really sore and a broken pinky lol helmet took a whack, leathers and Sidi's did thier job though! | ||

Perry - did you go through insurance? how did the process with the frame work? how long was the bike down for... How are the "improved" body parts ? | ||

The damage you have on the bike does not make it unrideable - just makes it ugly. This is were most folks get themselves a track toy. Don't know how your insurance Co is to deal with - but see if they'll take a salvage bid from you - see what they say. I've got dents on the racebike from various tip-overs. Been tempted to fill them in for looks but am just too lazy. I don't know how you go about it but with the high deductible, I might just be tempted to fix it and ride it - unless the insurance company gave me a sweet deal on a salvage offer. | ||

Glad your O.K. alot of insurance companies will total a Buell with frame damage, cannot repair have to replace. but from what i've seen it take alot more than that to actually crack it. Good luck with the insurance company. | ||

Glad you were wearing your gear and made it through ok. As far as it goes, the insurance co. will make the call on whether they think it's totalled or not. If they do you can make an offer to buy it from them and get yourself a race bike. It's been done many times. The XBs crash well no matter what the insurance people may think, and parts can be had fairly cheap in comparison to other bikes. Did your bars bend? just wondering how they hit the puck. Thanks guys; The more input the better equipped for me to make the decision... a) make it rideable and ride it ugly - but for the most part value-less b) go the insurance route... Diablo- yeah the bar bent almost 90 degrees through the puck - not what the puck was meant for I know but I had to focus my anger somewhere lol | ||

EDM, See if your insurance company has a no fault clause for road hazards such as animals/gravel. I used to play canyon racer pretty hard and did some track time. Everytime the bike went down it was gravel or a deer.................. Insurance co. may have wised up by now though. | ||

At first I thought the frame pucks had saved the frame, but only when the puck was removed did I see a big dent. And yes, replacement was the only option, no repair. But, I believe it would have been fine to ride with the dent. The frame puck completely hid it anyway. But then my handlebar never hit the frame puck, the dent came from hitting the pavement. It took like 6 weeks to get the frame! (they have to special make each one with the correct VIN# stamped into it), so I was without my bike for a couple months. In my case, it was late fall and my injuries made that a non-issue anyway. I had insurance through Harley (Dairyland) and they were pretty good about it, and didn't raise my rates either. My deductible was $500 I think. If you don't fix the frame, you could probably buy the parts and fix it up yourself for not much more than the deductible. IN fact, my swingarm had only cosmetic scratches in it, so I could sell you a cosmetically scratched swingarm pretty cheap... |
