i went to my local "Me Too" bike shops to look and boots and a new textile jacket. i ended up walking out with one of those spine looking tank protecter! I used the giving alchol pad that was in the package. It turned the lower half of my tank into a light haze. I think no problem, ill just hit it with Novus 1. well it didnt work. So i went to a HD shop about 2 miles away and got some Novus 2, haze and scratch remover. Tried it about 4 times and nothing.. well it acually went from a light scratchy looking haze, to just a bigger haze.. So tomorrow im going to go get the s100 to see if that works! Anyone else have any suggestions that may work with some common household items? i really donr wanna screw this thing up already. thnaks | ||

I used acetone to clean the frame before mounting my frame pucks. It dripped all over the black plastic air scoop and made horrible looking white drip marks. They are still there over a year later, I am lazy and have other things to do. | ||

A quick search for plastic and polish in the xboard section turned up a bunch of suggestions. Black bikes are really popular, but also the hardest to keep really shiny. My 12R is black, and I tried to remove some scratches with Novus 2 and found it left a haze. The manual recommends Novus 2 on the Clear or Translucent Plastics, but Harley Scratch and Swirl Treatment (Part No. 94655-98) on the solid colors. I’ve used the Harley product and found that although it still leaves a slight haze when compared to virgin areas, it’s much better on the Black than the Novus. Follow it up with S100 Detail and Wax or pure Carnauba wax and it looks great. As with using any product for the first time, you should always try it in an inconspicuous location first..... Good luck getting her back to show room condition! | ||

Novus 1, 2, and 3 are different 'grits' of polish. For really bad scratches or blemishes, you start with 3, then go to 2, then finish with 1. For lesser problems, start with 2, then 1. For very minor issues, just use 1. Other brands follow the same principle. If you have a haze caused by a residue, try windex first to clean it off. If it is fine scratches or chemical damage to the plastic surface you may have to polish the plastic down to below the damaged part - in other words, grind away the surface with a polish. The finer the polish, the longer it will take, and the more elbow grease required. Eventually though, you should get it back to looking good unless there is very deep chemical damage to the plastic, in which case you would have to buy new plastics. | ||

there are NO scratches. just a haze that wont seem to go away.. im not going to get much time to work on it tonight. But if i do ill try some s100 or even some windex. | ||

I thought I had ruined my black plastic with Novus, left it hazy. Plexus fixed it. | ||

The "alcohol" pad may have been acetone or another solvent. That sorts of stuff does a number on the mollded in color parts. Mother's Car Care products makes a plastic polish that to me seems to produce a better gloss with less effort than the Novus. I'm a bit vertically challenged with a 29" inseam and keeping that portion of the air box cover nearest to the seat shiny and unscuffed is an eternal challenge. I polish every time I wash. | ||

I have used both Plexus and Crystal-Glo on the translucent plastics and painted pieces and they both work amazingly. After I used the Crystal-Glo, I swear that bugs are not even sticking and it seems to really work great. From what I understand the Crystal-Glo is an acrylic coating. | ||

I actually used armor-all window cleaner and wiped the plastics dry. It's a little more refuse but it leaves a nice shine. | ||

doesnt windex have ammona though? is that ok for painted platics? Or our the stock plastics even painted? are they molded to there color? tried mothers plastic polish today and still didnt work. im going out to ride the damn thing now, its TOO nice out to be worried about it right now! | ||

This cover does the trick of protecting the airbox cover, it was rather cheap too. (like $30) Arent those spine cover deals for painted gas tanks anyway?  (Message edited by eric_m on May 27, 2006) | ||

They use it on their windscreens too. I'd rather sweat than bleed, wouldn't you? White is definitely the FASTEST color Buell. | ||

I had a tank mask on my 98 honda F3 and it did more damage than good... fine grit gets under it and gets ground into the paint... I had more scratches under the mask than on the exposed areas... just my experience with them. Never again... |
