I like a very stiff suspension. I was wondering what is everyones thoughts on putting a solid rear strut on my 2001 X1? (hard tail) Would it cause any problems down the road. I was also planning on buying the stiffest after market springs for the front. Any help and suggestions would be great. Thanks |

So,if you like to scuttle over the road instead of driving, what about a wooden front end?Ask your local carpenter. A hardtail is a very bad idea, if you like to go faster than 80Km/h,not to mention any cornering speed or slanting position. Ralph |

i gotta agree with Ralph. Bikes with hardtails are very long and stable. I would bet that on a short wheelbase you would run into trouble. |

doby--the best thing to do would be send your rear shock off to traxxion dynamics or someone similar and have them rework your shock.if you really want it stiff tell them you weigh about 60 lbs.more than you really do.a solid strut is a really bad idea.on the front if you want it stiff as well put in the stiffer springs and run a heavy fork oil.this should give you what you are looking for. |

Good advice was from Xldevil "very bad idea" Think of this, you are going around a corner and there is a bump in the road, now since you have virtually no suspension, instead of it doing it's job and absorbing that bump and keeping your tire on the ground, the force flows through the bike and you tire leaves the pavement..........do you see where this is going? It's asking to take a fall. There is alot more to suspension than just having it stiff, you also need to make sure that the compression and rebound are comperable to the spring and fluid that you are using. So it can still function and keep your tires planted on the road. You can first try adjusting the preload on the rear and makeing your compression and rebound adjustments from there, if that's not enough then I would look to Traxxion like mentioned. If not set up properly it really can ruin the handling of the bike. |

Years ago I knew someone who had a friend who put struts on the rear of his sportbike and make the forks rigid too. Said to have worked very well on very smooth roads. He liked to ride Ortega highway very fast, it was not very smooth, I do not know how the story ends since I moved away and lost contact with said friend before his friend lost contact with said road. |

Also for the front, use heavier oil, and fill it to the specified Maximum from the book. Use single rate springs in front, instead of Progressive, they come in pretty stiff increments from Race Tech. |

99buellX1 I did not care for X1devils comment there was no advice in his post at all. X1devil told me what he thinks would happen if i had a solid strut. What i asked was for everyones thought AND ideas. Not just tell me the bike would not handle i know it would not handle just wanted to know the best way to set it up real stiff i do lot of 2 up riding and the shock i have bottoms out a lot. I don't need some a$$hole telling me the bad part of it and not telling me anything else. Don't be a dick if i want that i'll go over to sacborg. You know, i think i will go there from now on. It's expected from those guys to say stupid $hit like X1devil said, but when they do at least they add what they would do. So in the words of sacbog F@#K OFF. I won't be back. Please ban me so i can't come back to this $hitty site. |

If you put a strut on the rear, I think you'd be stressing the engine cases a great deal. Remember, the engine is a stressed member on a tuber. This may not be such a big deal on a dragstrip, but for everyday riding (especially 2-up) I could see bad things happening to your engine with problems associated to the plastic deflection in the cases. I hope that answer shows you the respect you think you deserve, but I personally think you are a fool with the manners of a lout. |

Doby: the was a conspirational wink, the post was not to be taken in all seriousness, "we" see a lot of the tube frame buells destroyed for "choppas" and in general things that are choppa esque as your question was worded or on that vein, tend to produce that kind of response from some members, sorry that you dont want to participate here, from my point of view if the Dev's comment tweeked you, how do you tollerate sac-borg? either way placing a solid bar in place of your bikes rear shock is a major bad idea my .02$ |

"just wanted to know the best way to set it up real stiff i do lot of 2 up riding and the shock i have bottoms out a lot" If this was asked in the 1st place, the chances for the kind of responses looked for would have been greatly increased. |

I'm still wondering if you have adjusted the rear preload first? Would be the best place to start. I like how one bad post and that must mean that the entire site is crap. lol This site definately has more Buell info than any other, but if you must go......bye. |

This looks to be an adjustable strut. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Buell-Race-Cyclone-Lightening-Lowering-strut-Kit- M2-X1_W0QQitemZ4641897764QQcategoryZ10064QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem Looks like a cheap 'n easy way to try a rigid ride. |

Adjust the preload by about 1/2" tighter. Always needed when riding 2 up. Please don't strut. The front engine mounts are stressed to the max. as it is. How many of us have had broken front motor mount bolts? |
