I'm looking for suggestions on the best way to remove the bearings from my swingarm in preperation for powder coating. Thanx |

the bearing cups inside the swingarm can be driven out with a long drift from the other side, tapping gently around the periphery of the inside edge of the cup -- tap gently, and take your time, as the cups are MUCH harder than the swingarm, and you can distort the cup seat area if you're not careful I used a long brass drift, just to make sure I didn't booger up the swingarm |

Sorry for the ignorance but... What is a "drift"? |

Found it. Apparenlty you can use aluminum gutter spikes with the ends cut off to the same effect and less cost. |

sorry bud -- a drift is a hard thing that you can wail on to transfer the force to yet another object -- I don't think an alum gutter spike will stand up to it, but if it's got a large enough diameter (half inch or larger, mebbe?) it might -- get a hunk of brass stock (round is best, be prepared to dress the end every so often) |

Depending on the miles on your bike consider bearing replacement. At about 20,000 miles the ones on my S1 where shot. |

oops, sorry, I should have added that -- the process of removing the bearing cups will almost certainly render then useful only as a paperweight -- do NOT reinstall em -- the bearing set is inexpensive enough that, so long as you've got it all torn down, you should replace the bearings and isolators anyways thanks for pointing that out, Mr Karma ;-} |

thanx for the help. I'm hoping to get the arm powder coated before putting the bike back together. |

Are the swingarm bearing and seals a common enough item to get them at a Harley only dealership or will I need to mail order These? (by the way... the powder coating came out awesome) |
