I know this question has probably been asked before, but since I'm fairly new to the World According to Buell, here goes...

What is the major benefit of running the Race ECM vs. a Power Commander? I have a local shop (not a dealership) with a dyno. These guys have offered up free dyno tuning with the purchase of a Power Commander. Some of our local Buellers have had this done there and have had great things to say about the shop.

I know the ECM swap is very easy and all I need is a TPS reset afterward, but would I be better off with the PC dyno tuned or just the race ECM?

Thanks in advance for giving me some advice...

I'd go with the PCIII. Nothing like some adjustability and having it dyno tuned for your specific motorcycle.
What mods do you have on the bike?
If only the race kit exactly and you don't plan on changing anything in the future (haha) the Race ECM will do.

I've got a used PCIII for sale with the Hiperf. O2 sensor, Pm me if you're interested

ok .. why are u guys selling?? whats new, or better?!

i am interested in absolutely maximizing my xb12r to race spec over time .. crashed twice, hence now trackbike/experiment..

interested in the tuning abilties of pc111 & sundry ecu's ..

micron - for example make a full sys for buell xb in s/s .. anyone tuned for this?

any #'s on av. hp/ft# for buell racekitted xb12r's? where to look .. after my bike nealry killed me 11 days ago, i am interested in why it 'suddenly' seemed more violent to ride?!

Direct Link is the new software that has come out recently.

It allows re-tuning the stock, or race, ECM across all
parameters, timing, individual cylinders, the works.

It basically makes the add-on bandaids obsolete.

Contact Al at American Sport Bike, or DaveS at Appleton H-D/Buell
for more details, or just do a search for Direct-Link,
or directlink on the board. You'll find a lot of threads.

Yep, I went with Direct Link, thats why I'm selling the Power Commander. I suppose that for someone that doesnt want to spend all the money on dyno tuning, and just wants to tweak the bike a little, the PCIII and the TFI are still good for that.

i will be getting my direct link from al this week. decided to break down and spend the cash as i have been running VERY lean w/ my combination. Al iS a great guy to talk to. real smart and knows his buells for sure. i would suggest speaking w/ him about you options on the PCIII OR race ecm.

The plus side of the PCIII is you can tune for a richer A/F ratio in the closed loop area for max power. It has the O2 offset adjustment. This is an advantage for track use. With the Direct link you MUST tune to 14.7:1 in the closed loop region, which is just fine for the street, not maximal for the track.

I'm not convinced that the tuning over the closed loop domain to anything other than 14.7:1 on a race bike is any disadvantage. If you need more power, it's always a wrist twist away, you don't need to get it through a richer A/F ratio. And I'm not convinced that a race bike would be operating in the closed loop domain more than 5% of the time on a track anyway. it would NEVER be operating IN closed loop period, as closed loop is only steady state throttle under light load, and you won't get that every on a track. There would be some short periods where the throttle position/RPM might be in the closed loop domain, but the impact of that operation being at 14.7:1 would be negligible, IMHO.

The other advantages of Directlink over a PCIII make it a better choice.

BTW, if one REALLy wanted to, you could just tune the bike to any A?F you want over the whole domain and not even install an O2 sensor. THis is the way the DOS race ECM works. the only disadvantage is that you would lose all automatic density compensation for different track altitudes, and the regular ECM doesn't have a "learned Fuel" (i.e, manually setable FIXED, not dynamic, AFV) parameter like the DOS ECM does.
