Can someone help me here? I have my forks completely disassembled except for the slider and the bottom of the fork assembly. I have seen just the bottom of the fork for sale on the bay so I'm pretty sure that it can be taken apart. Unless the guy hacksawed the slider off. I removed the allen head screw from the bottom and the small torque set screw from the side but can't get them apart. When I looked through the hole where the set screw is, it looks like the bottom of the slider is threaded into the bottom part of the fork but I'm not sure. I called Buell but they were of no assistance with this problem. I looked at my service manual and there is nothing there on how to remove the slider. Any Ideas????????? Thanks in advance, Jim | ||

Is this an XB type fork? If so, then you use the two pieces like a slide hammer and slide hammer the inner piece out from the outer. WARNING: You will trash the guide bushing and will have to replace them, by doing this. The guide bushings have a thin layer of teflon on them, and when you pull the tube assembly apart it trashes this layer of teflon. I purchased new bushings, seal, dust seal, o-rings...etc from DaveS last year for my XB forks and the total for all parts was about $35.00. You will need a special tool to reinstall the new bushings.  Since a picture is worth a 1000 words and I remember how scary it was to slide hammer the fork apart I wanted to post this too. 16 is the upper guide bushing (it is clipped around the sider) 18 is the lower guide bushing and is press fit into the outer fork tube. 14 dust seal, 1 snap ring, should be removed before doing the slide hammer action. When doing the slide hammer action 16 hammers 18 out of the outer tube. | ||

Hi Loren, Thanks for the reply. The portion that I'm trying to remove is the main part of the fork, and the bottom part that the axle goes through and the fender bolts to. Oh and I guess it would help that I mention that I have an 04 XB12R  I need to remove the bottom because I am having my forks hard coat anodized and I need to remove the slider??? I don't have my parts book with me so I'm a lost for words for the exact name of the thing.  Here are the two parts that I'm trying to separate. | ||

If you have removed the spring damper assy...and pull the dust cover seal, remove the spring clip from the oil seal, remove oil seal with a small pick tool and then push the outer fork tube and slider together (compressed position. Then with a very quick forceful action pull the two apart. It may take a couple of times. What you are doing is driving the lower guide bushing out of the outer tube. It's a piece of cake. You will trash the guide bushing doing this, there is no way around it, so plan on replacing them. | ||

Where's the best place to buy the special tool(s) needed to install bushings? I've got 18k on mine, with one fork oil change. seals are leaking now, so from what I have read I'll need to drive forks apart to replace seals, which will trash bushings. |
