I lowsided (left side) the other day. After I replaced the shifter and linkage, my bike ('03 XB9SL) is stuck in 5th gear. I can't get it to change gears at all. Any thoughts? |

Can you post a bit more info? - after the crash were you able to shift? - other than replacing the shifter & linkage, did you take anything else apart? - how do you know it's stuck in 5th? Henrik |

After the crash, I was able to move the linkage, but I didn't get any positive feedback to know for sure if it was shifting. I was in 1st or 2nd when the crash occurred. I only replaced the shift linkage rod end (right-hand thread) and the bolt that mounts the shifter to the case - did not open the case. I do not know for sure it is in 5th gear, but when I took it out for a ride after replacing the linkage, I had to rev it higher and carefully let out the clutch. Also, she wants to go FAST (so I think it is in 4th or 5th). (Message edited by paulson on May 04, 2006) |

Nobody?? OK. I'll just let the dealer figure it out. |

I'll assume you've tried rolling it back and forth without using the clutch and while working the shift lever to try and get it to jump a gear or two without the engine running. The biggest problem in diagnosing an XB tranny is that they do not have the trapdoor feature of the older bikes which allows easy tranny removal. The engine will have to come out and the cases will need to be split open if they/you can't figure it out. You might try opening up the inspection cover on the primary side, or even removing the primary cover and check the visible parts in there for potential problems. Could be as simple as a drift/roll pin having worked loose and that's not allowing the shifter to fully work. You might have also bent the shifter shaft that extends out of the cover thereby causing issues internally. Real hard to diagnose over the internet. |

Thanks Mike! I do understand that this one is difficult to diagnose online. I really appreciate your input here. That is exactly what I was looking for. |

And almost all the stuff I could picture damaged in a low side will be completely accessible if you pull the primary cover, and can be replaced without splitting the cases. Pull the primary cover, pull the stator and clutch and primary chain as a unit (two big freaking nuts, one reverse threaded, but otherwise not difficult), and I think you will be able to see and fix the problem. |

WAY COOL! I think I will look at this after my move. Will chime back in with the end results. Thanks! |

So.... Finally got Betty to the dealer for a looksee. They took off the cover and just put it all back together. It seems that some stuff got knocked loose in the lowside. Some cleaning up, new gaskets and oil and I was back on the road. |
