Sunday cruising on the Blast! on Brunswick Pike heading into Lambertville, NJ (across the Delaware from New Hope PA) when I encounter a very wet, downhill left, sharper than I thought. The crown of the road worked against me and I didn't have the feeling I could have rolled off or braked to make the turn so I locked em up and rode into the guard rail at about 10 mph. Not at all serious, resultwise. Dinged the flyscreen, cracked the speedometer housing into 50 pieces, twisted the handlebars in their mounts. After a chill period, readjusted the handlebars and continued at a subdued pace. Lesson: get more lean work in, and respect wet pavement. As a 350 mile novice rider, this was a low-cost wakeup call. | ||

Mother_Big - I've known a lot of guys who ran off the road and later tell me "If I'd leaned further I would've been ok." But then again on wet roads you may have low-sided the thing instead of hitting the rail. Either way...glad you came out ok and have the right attitude. | ||

Chuck, Will a HUGE woodchuck work? I also am investigating a camera mount for the ol' girl. With all that exposed framework on the left side and all. Should be pretty easy to hang the video out there. The helmet cam gets ordered this week. Now back to LARGE obstacles in the roadway. 1) Tooling around Thief River Falls(Mn) after a fresh snow. Just after sunset in my rag top Wrangler. All of a sudden looms this hulking meandering moose. At least he was going in my direction... for a short time. 2) Ford F350 w/utility body, dead dear(Wisconsin size extra large) in my lane. Car coming at me, bad brakes in truck, horrified look on my partners face, really horrifed look on the face coming at me, never even felt the truck go over it. Michigan Buell Rider, On Monday 5/28 a Black Buell slowed to see if I was OK at 26 Mile Rd and I-94 north of Detroit. The only damage was to the cell phone - it jumped out of my pocket at 70 mph. If you are lurking on the web here, send a message or email djtetreau@yahoo.com. Dave | ||

Turnagain, Where did you grab that shot? Sure looks a lot like the Anchorage area. On a trip to Fairbanks last weekend, we saw 10 moose, 6 porcupines, a small herd of caribou and Bunny rabbits galore. It's worse than Frogger out there! | ||

UGH PAIN, Well last night my poor Blast was blasted to a lump of metal. A moron rear ended me in traffic smashing the bike and launching me a good 40' or so. This is one of those times when I am happy for a number of things. 1) I'm happy I always wear a helmet. 2) I'm happy that I wear a armored leather jacket even though it's hot as F#$%. 3) I am very happy that I earned a black belt in Aikido a few years ago because it taught me how to fall...more importantly how to get up from a fall. I rolled and landed on my feet. It took a while the adrenalin to wear off and the pain to set in. Right now I'm on the ice, rest and motrin therapy program...and doing well. The only injury is a razzberry on my elbow from my jacket lining and bumps and bruises all over my body. I'll try and shoot some photos of it tommorrow or friday when I drop off my helmet. I already miss my little blast and I'm not sure that I'll upgrade even if it is possible. I kinda got my eye/heart set on a "grape juice" Blast if the dealer/insurance company condemns my little turtle. I do have some thoughts on how I would do things different. Definatly go with a White Bros exhaust instead of V&H...Drag bars a different fender eliminator.hummmm time to think....and rest. | ||

No the cops were very busy yesterday. an Ambulance was part of the reason for the crash and the reason I was geting off the highway at that exit...crazy traffic...to many morons. It'll be a long time before I ever use that exit again...many accident there from what the Police said. Said moron who hit me is a Bank Manager...no clue if he was on the phone though here it wouldn't suprise me. | ||

Aikigecko, Glad to hear you made it through. I was beened from behind in my car on the parkway. It hurts more the next day. After a few months of chiropractic and an MRI, which showed a buldge, they offered me crap and an attitude, but I got even to the tune of $6,000 without a lawyer. Settle when you feel healed, cause you will never know what might come about years down the road. Although I stopped, I will always remember learning how to fall in Aikido. I switched to Tae Kwon Do cause I love being able to kick and keep in shape. | ||

I'm covered for life medically (USN) no worries on that. I just got a call from the other uy's insurance. Their gonna cover it all. My only fight is gonna be for the camera gear in my tank bag. The Nikon F3hp that I built from parts I gotta show real world cost new ($1500) vs used ($500-$800) and my new (to me) 105mm lens. That shouldn't be to hard. The claims agent is just suprised the manual cameras can cost so much. | ||

Anyone that has been hit by a car while on a motorcycle should sue the pants off the reckless driver for anything you can. That is just one way we motorcyclist are going to get the cagers to realize we are on the roads also. I've seen, heard and read of too many stories of a cager getting off with just an increase in insurance and a traffic ticket and they just laugh it off. One such case in my home town. Five years ago a old lady that broad sided a biker at a 4 way stop and got nothing but an insurance increase and a $100.00 traffic ticket. The rider (a buddy of mine) still has a limp and can't move well enough to shift gears thus he doesn't ride anymore. Last year the same old lady swiped another biker from the side and killed him. This time the biker was motionless at a stop light and the old lady took a wide right turn around the corner to hit him. The report claims the old lady was driving fast. The by-standers claim the old lady was doing a reasonable speed but was aiming for the biker and didn't show any remorse or concern for what she had done. All she got in the end was a comfy room at the nursing home. Supposedly she had connections around town that covered up the truth and she agreed to turn herself into a nursing home for a year until things blew over. I know she is out of the nursing home now because she drove by my house five days ago while I was polishing my bike and she gave me a dirty look. Since then I've pissed off a lot of town officials by asking questions as to why she is allowed to drive again. Take a stand for better driver education and safety awareness programs for drivers. Don't let dangerous drivers be allowed to drive. Or at least make them feel the pain of the victim even if it's just in their pocket book. Ok I'll get off my soap box now. This subject matter (cars hitting bikes) is one that really gets me pissed off. | ||

Yeah I hate hate it when cagers hit bikers too but I'm only here in hawaii for 8 more months. Where upon I'm moving to Japan (where bikes of all kinds are accepted) as long as they settle up I really don't care at this point. This guys first words to me were something like "I didn't see you" well if the glowing orange and yellow vest and the reflective tape on my helmet didn't clue him in than maybe he ought to slow down. The fact that I heard his engine rev as he pulled out from behind another car makes me beleive he was trying to get out of traffic as much as I was and just didn't look. Hell I've done that before in a cage but I never hit anyone. Peace Tony | ||

Unless you have some special medical compensation covering you (work accident like sucked into an intake of an F14, A7, etc) ya may wanna investigate the farse of military having lifetime medical coverage. (NOT FOR FREE!) Being AF for almost 18 years and the son of a retired AF MSgt, the military does not have free medical for life. We have Tricare and it is some of the crappiest medical coverage out there. The medical community is now recognizing that it pays crap for the most part and finding clinics to accept it is increasingly difficult. Sure we signed the dotted line with the understanding of free medical care for life for the guy/gal giving 20+, but NOTHING is free. Insurance is available at cost ... DAve Military with free medical coverage for life is in the same package as no taxes, free house, and free clothing | ||

Good news the BLAST® is a breeze to put back in shape. Let me know if you need any help/advise. Moose Mom: Egads.....AK is on of the 4 states that I have NOT ridden a Buell in but...talk to me here....All I hear of is this VAST expanse of nothing-nuss and YOU find something to whack into? Aikigecko, This is going to be a rant, but SUE. If not for yourself, then for my cousin who was in a hit and run, flipped over a few times, and suffered a lot of trauma, caught the guy cause his license plate # was imbedded in my cousin's bumper, and my cousin got barely enough to even cover his medical bills, and not a dime for his months of suffering. Or for my wife's cousin who is in a halo with a broken neck right now. Takes Blake's advice, and document your recovery. My whipslash (mind you I was rear-ended at 55pmh, while I was not moving) has not flared up since, but that is because of proper medical attention. I would have just gone home and rested, but a quick trip to the emergency room and they told me I was not going to just be sore, and that was the truth. Assess your injuries if any, treat them accordingly, and then contact the bum's insurance company to discuss a settlement for your pain and suffering. My cousin is a personal injury attorney and said I could get about 3X my medical bills, and by golly, I did. MRI's are expensive you know, and are worth the time. Great thing about NYS is No Fault, and I just "charged everything to the Underhill's". | ||

You could also scare the guy and get an attorney to supoena his cell phone records to see if he was on the phone at the time. Also supoena his email and ISP records to see if he was also loged in while driving via his palmpilot or other portable computer. | ||

While I would love to sock it to this guy but in all honesty I just don't have the time. In the time I have left living here in Hawaii (8 months) I will be traveling at least 3-4 months of that (read as off island all over the world). Whether by luck or design I came out of it (the crash) rather well. I've been worse off after a long hike (this is the truth). I'll be visiting the Agent today and while I'm there I'll ask about "pain and suffering" but with the mil. paying my medical bills I don't have much I camplain about. I'll be surfing this weekend which will likely work out the last of the kinks. Court, What Girl? The camera will be replaced before the bike. Along with my Handspring Visor, which I really miss. As for military and medical...congress and the courts have made some inroads into the legal moras of our medical coverage. My dad has his lifetime coverage back. I figure in the next 8 years before I retire something will be done. if not well still have coverage until medicare kicks in. | ||

At least try for "repairs" to your quality leathers, and payment for lack of transportation. They may laugh at your claim for pain and suffering, so nail them when it comes to wanting your damaged riding gear back to the way it was prior to the crash. Don't forget the nightmares and bed wetting since the accident. | ||

I'm claiming a new armor kit for my leathers. I believe foam whether in the helmet or in the leathers is untrustworthy after a major spill. To me 30-40 feet of flying is a mojor spill. A few minor scuffs in my leather jacket on the right arm and shoulder...as soon as the agent shoots her shoulders I'm gonna buff them out. And yes I'm claiming the helmet. Yup they're gonna pay my bus pass for 2 months (about as long as I figure I'll need) as well as the tow for the bike ($75). Oh and Jasonl my wife would have hit the roof (and everyone else on her way to the jerks place of work) if that were true....it ain't. Peace Tony |
