my xb12 is blowing oil. It appears like it is coming from the base gasket. Is that likely, and if so is it common? |

If you "OVER FILL your" your OIL TANK, the excess oil has to get out of you engine anyway it can ... When the HEADS get too full the oil from the head breathers is released into the THROTTLE BODY which make it VERY, VERY, VERY "DIRTY" ... THIS BREATHER HOSE NEEDS TO BE ROUTED INTO A "CATCH CONTAINER" BECAUSE YOU NEVER WANT TO "POLUTE" THE "INTAKE CHARDE" !!! |

that is not a common problem, but is quite possible. the base gaskets are not terribly expensive, but you will need to replace the head gaskets at the same time, which will entail lowering ( rotating) the engine for service, which is something that i have not done. |

!!HIGHJACK!! I've seen breather hose filters that keep you from having to redirect anything. (not to mention they're a ton cheaper)...why chose the catch can over the filters? (Message edited by aeroe on May 10, 2006) |

the filters still have oil coming out of them. It will oil down the outside of your engine, is that any different, or worse than having it come out of the base gasket? Besides, the catch can allows you to keep track of just how much oil left the motor by way of the breather. Not to mention how much water too. There are almost always easy inexpensive ways to get a job done. It's usually not the best way to get the job done.
