Hiya all, I checked the KV, but could not find a specific thread on my concern... I did find a thread on the "Oiled" K&N vs. the New "Synthetic"/White" Buell Race filter...But nothing specific on whether running just a K&N/Buell Race filter with a stock ECM and stock pipe. Will doing so cause an unwanted over-lean (hot) condition, or can the stock mapping of the ECM/O2 sensor compensate for the increase in airflow through the throttle body? My suspicion is that doing so should be of no consequence and that the stock ECM mapping should be able to compensate? Anyone? |

My CityX ran lean after putting the Special Ops pipe and a de-snorkel. So, I would think that it would be possible for the K&N to also make it run lean. Do you have the stock pipe on it? If so, you could be ok with that. I am by no means an authority on this, so others may know differently. (Message edited by ratyson on May 08, 2006) |

Ratyson, Yes Xb12X w/stock pipe... I'm actually enjoying the lack of noise (used to have XB9S w/race kit (K&N pipe and ECM), before that a '98 S3 (Vance & Hines, Yost power tube Jet Kit).... I tend to agree, I think just an air filter change out should not be a problem... But figured I'd see what the consensus is... |

I have a K&N on my bike at the moment with no other mods. It's fine. The snorkel is still in place so it's really not getting more air than before. To my knowledge; Air passes through the K&N quicker than stock but if you don't change the volume of air coming in it won't make a big difference. |

I ran my bike with the "race" intake (K&N filter, snorkel removed) and the stock ECM for a while with no issues. I later ran the bike with the stock airbox setup and a drummer on the stock ECM with no issues. That data is far from scientific, but at least in my case the bike survived a few thousand miles with an open intake on a stock ECM. |

I have a K&N filter, snorkle removed and a jardine muffler w/ stock ecm. Ran 10 minutes at 3200-3500 rpm. like some have suggested here and bike runs fine. This was 500 miles ago so I will pull the plugs to double check. Don't suspect any problems though. |

I just replaced my plugs after 5K with a K&N, Open Airbox, DeSnorkel and a Jardine and they looked fine. I was pretty surprised, but they weren't black or white. I replaced them anyway, but they could have just been put back in if I had wanted to. |

i'll go one further... K&N with OPEN airbox (just top circle cover) and race pipe/ecm...will it run differently from just filter/race muffler/ecm? in other words, modifying the airbox itself, will it run leaner/richer than if i left the airbox alone? |

My 03 XB9R is running a K&N air filter, XB12 air box cover and the stock ECM. I've done 3 track days and put around 3000 miles on it with this set-up. The bike runs excellent. I'm not saying this is ok, but has worked for my XB. |

Works fine for me too. 03' 9S, K&N, de-snorkeled, stock pipe and ECM (for now ). |

So is the upshot of all that experience that if you keep the stock pipe you will not get the full benefit of the K&N/Race filter/Open airbox/XB12 inner airbox cover/perforated inner airbox/snorkelectomy which is all within the stock ECM capability? The limiting factor being the exhaust/muffler? But as soon as you allow really free breathing with a less restrictive pipe the ECM then needs some help/modification with the fuelling? I ask because I have stock pipe and filter on my 9SX and found removing the snorkel seemed to let the motor spin up more smoothly and maybe a bit quicker in the midrange. Last night I also drilled about 20 holes in the inner airbox but haven't tried it out yet. I'd like a FAST kit because it just looks so bizzare under the Hero Blue bodywork but is there any point without a pipe and expensive fuel control work? |

12 (dimpled) airbox, K&N Filter, and desnorkalization is the standard fare first mod [on a 9R/S]... (I have the Pro Sparkplugs also) Personally, I found this to smooth things out very nicely with my 9R. It feels less like it's lugging as I pull out from a standstill (no, it never actually lugged - it's just the best way I can describe it) Basically, you're removing some EPA bits and letting the engine breath. The stock ECM will need to be changed out if upgrading your pipe. |

Thanks Midknyte. Matt at Trojan Horse has confirmed as much too. I'm now saving for a new exhaust and ECM work or a TFI unit. Results of the shootout eagerly anticipated |

direct link is quickly making the tfi, and pc3, and even the "race" ecm obsolete. |

I am running K&N with a stock set up on my 05 CityX. I just bought Race ECM and Odie Pipe. I was told that will be fine. But if your wanting to tune for the set up, better get the Direct Link and let the Dyno Machine hook u up.
