The Buell Race Kit (can, ECU & air filter) is VERY quiet by aftermarket pipe standards. Chadhargis has posted in some other thread that " you can't hear it at 50'". That's about right. I wear an HLC flip helmet w/ NO earplugs & don't hear it normally & BARELY when "hitting it". I've both sold bikes or changed back to stock pipes because I CAN'T STAND NOISE! Loud pipes s*ck, they don't save lives.

I agree w/ Namibian regarding the Buell Race Kit. I had a Special Ops Tailgunner on my Uly, before installing the Race Kit and I gotta say the race can is quite a bit more quiet/muffled. |

BTW, anyone hear the 150HP XBRR's at Daytona?
I did.But it was on the Monday before the 200,
with Crevier riding.He was running so far ahead of the pack of Nortons and Moto Guzzis that you couldn't help but hear that unique sound!
I find the older I get,the less I like loud.
My S2T has an external disc Supertrapp that can be a bit noisy.I know I can change the Db
level,but it was tuned on a dyno and runs well as is.
I want a Uly and will leave the stock muffler in place.

When I bought my Uly in September the first comment my neighbor made was "you gotta get a louder pipe-around here (Metro DC especially the beltway) with a louder exhaust they will hear you before they see you." This comes from someone with 20 years of riding experience in the area.
I got my Drummer last month. I have to say so far I think he's right. I know its pretty subjective and you can never know how many "near misses" you avoided. I do know for sure, however, that in the last 2 weeks I consistently notice cagers actually turning their head to look as I come up on them from the rear in an adjacent lane. That rarely happened before but now it happens consistently.
I did like it quiet and if there was a "stealth" drummer that offered the same performance enhancements without the noise - well, I probably would have gone that route. But now that I've seen how the noise makes people actually look for the bike instead of acting surprised when I either hit the horn (freeway blaster) or pass them - well that picture is worth a thousand words.
If you really doubt that "loud pipes save lives" do your own research - go riding with a friend who has a loud exhaust and watch the cagers. Or get in your cage and have him buzz you a couple times in rush hour traffic.
And I have to admit it is fun to set off the occasional car alarm when you rumble through the parking garage. Twice. Or three times....
A loud pipe is not a guarantee but at least here in DC/MD/VA it is a significant improvement. I'll bet it even works on lesser bikes - like orange ones. |

Midnightrider - On your Freeway Blaster, was that a direct replacement or did you use a separate harness/relay? |

direct. electrically it was one plug and one nut, if i remember correctly. the diaphragm is considerably deeper, though, and since i needed to reverse it to avoid it striking the inside of the flyscreen i had to gently move some of the other wiring in there (then zip tie it to hold the position) to create a space. it was one of the first minor mods i did but i believe the best fit i could find involved mounting it diagonally at about the 10 o'clock position |

I put my stock pipe back on after a couple of hundred miles on the special ops. Odie makes a great pipe. Its just not for me. I have an 8 year old son that likes to ride with me and I don't want him as deaf as I am if we can help it. I'm getting a TPS reset next week as I'm really having surging at 3 grand and below. This was more noticable with the special Ops but probably more because of the extra sound. Odie gave the ok to send it back just like his guarantee states. That is awesome service. I wish I could make this pipe work for my uly but I put on too many miles. I need two bikes, one to pile on miles and one to make noise. I'm looking into more intake/fuell management mods vs. exhaust in the future. |

Don't feel too bad I had my Drummer on for about 9 or 10 days and I put the stock muffler back on. Great performing muffler but just a little too much noise. I have to agree with those who have said the noisy exhaust just doesn't suit the Uly. Needs something a little noisier than stock but not too much louder than stock |

I don't know how much the Buells typically louden up with time. My M2 is coming up on 6,000 miles and I took a longish faster ride the other day (200 miles, mostly at 70 or so) and was thinking to myself that the exhaust note is perfect for me.
I have hearing aids that I mute when I put my helmet on and that is equivalent to riding with typical disposable ear plugs. I get a muted but clearly heard sound that is as much as I'd ever want.
I can remember when having a lound exhaust was neat thing, but I outgrew it many years ago. I think I went away with the 20-50 dB of hearing loss I have attained over the years from a variety of causes. The dancing's almost over, the bill is being paid.
