Go to the Buell web site...so much for a new engine in '02. Maybe in '03. We can always dream! |

Court, I think that we feel like the wind has been knocked out of us. The rumor mill has been churning for a while and we all probably expected a revelation/revolution. What we got was blue paint on exhaust headers and purple plastic. Keep hope alive!! |

Maybe they will build these current 2002 models thru January and then introduce the good stuff as 2003 models. Just in time for "Spring Fever". Any other guesses? |

Ralph, Your taking the work 'progressive' wrong.....progressive in this description does not mean 'ample progress' rather they make itty bitty steps in model changes..... chrome piece here, new switch there....no one (me included) will ever accuse HD of being cutting edge. Brad |

This pretty much confirms what we've been guessing, but what are they really saying about the Buell? Non-Harley-powered? Really! From AMASuperbike.com on the US Superbike Silly Season: "Harley-Davidson-- Two intriguing possibilities exist that may elevate the chances of the VR1000: both Harley and Buell are reputed to be debuting brand new motorcycles at the dealer show next month. For Buell it will be a V-twin based on the Blast single, for the first non-Harley-powered Buell in twenty odd years. The second rumored detail is more intriguing: Harley will debut a brand new engine that shares no parts with the current line. Could either of these be the basis of a VR1000 replacement engine?" Another juicy tidbit is the possibility of Miguel Duhamel riding for the Bar & Shield team! Sparky 96S1, 98S3 |

The engine that shares no current common parts would be the WaterBuffalo engine. |

Calling the Blast based 2-cyl non-harley is a stretch. OK, so it won't be used in an HD bike, but is it not merely an evolutionized Evolution? I am assuming it is pushrods still. If it goes OHC then maybe we got a Revolution. |

On a recent trip to the Arizona Desert I ran across a fellow with some info about what's been going on at the Ford Proving Grounds in Yucca, AZ. It seems HD has been out there several times testing a new engine with some problems. This fellow seemed to remember the source as saying the crankshaft kept breaking. Was it the new H2O engine or the Buell? He didn't know. Of course this is all third party info but it's something to think about. |

Well...lest someone read something into this like "Buell is about to introduce a motorcycle in the next 6 weeks and the cranshafts are breaking"..let me shine a bit of light on the processes and procedures. The bike you are hearing about is NOT the "imminent Buell". You are 7 states from the proper location. Not that they WEREN'T there....just not the one you pal heard of. If the cranks are breaking, that tells me that this is a projet in it's very early stages. Could, for instance, be the much hearalded "2008 World Slayer" Buell. I am not saying it is, I am just saying the the "imminent" Buell, at this point is long past the "crank breaking" stage. Well past tooling and in the process of having "practice" bikes built to verify the and validate the production process. Press bikes are being dialed in and the folks from media are scraming for a host of colors and configuations for photo shoots. All the while, Harley-Davidson District Managers are trying to scam a spare C.O.V. or get permission to use a Buell. The Ford facility in AZ is one of the great benefits of the HD/FoMoCo alliance and the reason the very tough to detect problem was revealed with the Buell shocks. The Ford facility is much different and a wonderful compliment to a couple other Buell test facilities. You have no worry about the crank integrity of your next Buell. Court |

How many ConRods are connected to that crank? How big are the pistons? How many valves? I hate you Court! You know so much yet divulge so little. |

Like I said... he didn't say what engine it was and he was not sure what part was failing. He said he thought it might be the crankshaft. This guy is not into motorcycles and did not pay too much attention. You can be sure if I was there when this convo went down I would be hammering the guy with questions. Not that he would answer them. I was just passing on some reliable info although it was third party. I was in no way trying to cast any kind of bad press for Buell or HD. If the guy had not seen the big BUELL sticker in my window he might not have even brought it up! On the other hand...Court So there is a bike being tested there? Was it a Buell and not a HD engine they were testing out there? Was there a problem with the crack on it? What kind of testing do they do at the AZ facility? Do you ride the bus or take your lunch? |
