Congratulations to all the Buell racers for a fine showing this past weekend at Road America, aka Elkhart lake!
Buell racers garnered 27 podiums including 6 wins during the CCS/ASRA race weekend at Road America this past weekend; that is definitely something to cheer about!

The news release at Buell.com concerning the delay in production of the XBRR's mentions that they'd be doing further testing at Road America. Were there any XBRR's there, or did they possibly just use test components in some of the bikes that competed?

Pretty sure that Steve Crevier and David Estok were riding XBRR's. Also heard a rumor that a German rider was there doing some testing too. Might that have been Rico Penzkofer? |

ELKHART LAKE, Wis. (April 24, 2006) – Veatch Motorsports rider David Estok rode a Buell Firebolt XB12R to a second-place finish at the American Sport Bike Racing Association (ASRA) Thunderbike National at the Road America course on Sunday. Hal’s Speed Shop rider Dan Bilansky was third, also on a Buell Firebolt XB12R. The race was won by Ed Key on a Suzuki, who also won several Championship Cup Series (CCS) support races during the weekend.
Estok, Bilansky and Deeley Harley-Davidson/Buell Canada rider Steve Crevier also used various ASRA and CCS races to test new components on the Buell XBRR developed since its competition debut at Daytona. Estok won the Solo Challenge class in the 250-kilometer ASRA Team Challenge race and crossed the finish line first ahead of the overall Team Challenge winner (solo entries are not included in the overall team results) aboard an XBRR. Crevier finished second in the Solo Challenge and charged from the back row of the 22-rider ASRA Superbike field to set a new class track record with a time of 2:22.763 (100.866 mph average) on his way to a fifth place finish aboard an XBRR.
Estok, the 2005 National Thunderbike series champion, took the pole and set a new ASRA Thunderbike track record in qualifying with a lap of 2:31.885 (94.809 mph average) on the four-mile Road America course with his Glen Veatch tuned Buell Firebolt XB12R. Bilansky qualified second with a lap of 2:33.156 (94.022 mph average).
Estok and Bilansky led at the start of the eight-lap Thunderbike National, and the two riders battled and swapped the lead four times in the first six laps. Key held back while the two Buell riders dueled, then caught and engaged Estok and Bilansky in turn one at the beginning of lap seven. Key passed Bilansky for second, and then got by Estok in turn five to take the lead. Bilansky spun his rear tire coming out of the Bend following the Carousel and left the course before regaining control and returning to the track, still in third place but out of contention for the lead. Key held off a determined Estok on the final lap to take the win.
“I was out there battling with Dan (Bilansky), and I think we were both surprised when Key suddenly caught us,” said Estok. “It was a great race and he did an excellent job out there.”
Fourth place went to Nate Kern on a BMW. Appleton Buell/Hoban Brothers Racing rider Jeff Johnson was fifth on a Buell Firebolt, followed by Harley-Davidson/Buell of Frederick rider Bryan Bemisderfer, also on a Buell Firebolt. Ducati riders Rhiannon Lucente and Brian Lacy were seventh and eighth. Blue Springs H-D/Buell’s Walt Sipp was ninth on a Buell Firebolt, and Hal’s Speed Shop/Spyder Leatherworks.com rider Paul James rode a Buell Firebolt to tenth position. Twelve of the 24 ASRA Thunderbike entries were on Buell motorcycles.
Throughout the ASRA/CCS race weekend at Road America, expert and amateur Buell racers accounted for 6 class wins and 26 podium finishes. Friday highlights included a GT Lights class win and 7th overall finish in the ASRA Team Challenge by teammates James and John Fox aboard a Firebolt XB12R; a 1-2 finish in CCS Thunderbike by Bilansky and Johnson; and two class wins by Julian Soell in amatuer Lightweight Supersport and Lightweight Superbike. On Saturday, Johnson, Estok and Bilansky swept the CCS Thunderbike podium.
After two events, Kern leads the ASRA Thunderbike series with 58 points, followed by Bemisderfer with 49 points and Johnson with 44 points. The next race on the eight-round ASRA Thunderbike National schedule is May 28-29 at Summit Point Raceway in Summit Point, W.Va.

I am really proud of ALL the Buell racers and the bikes.
That's pretty incredible and I think the track record pretty much renders moot the "yeah, but they were only racing Buells" and such silly arguments.

Does anyone know if Buell tested a new slipper clutch at Road America? Setting the ASRA class record was a great accomplishment but the bikes will need to be quicker for the AMA race weekend. I checked last years AMA results from Road America and found that a new AMA FX class record was set last year by Miguel Duhamel (2:17.952) and the leaders were running race laps deep in the 2:18's. We need McWilliam's back on the XB-RR to get a win in front of the home crowd. |

No slipper clutch, and cold weather. Also, Steve's lap record was set in a race without a shift toepeg. They had put on an aftermarket shifter to fit Steve better, and the toepeg fell off on the warm up lap. So he was pushing the lever withthe side of his foot, missing shifts frequently! |

it was a great weekend for buell . my liberty hd buell sponsed 12R lead every LW race it was in taking two thirds in LW GP and two fifths in CCS thunderbike.
hats off to Henry Dugo, Buell Motor Co., Eric Buell, and the great job all the buell racers did that weekend , OH and lets not forget thoughs clutchs |

Hmmm, I am not sure what "Superbike" race that was listed by the press release, but it wasn't the one with the CCS's top riders in it, I don't believe. I think the best indicator race for the FX for the XBRR was in the Superbike (600's), which had the XBRRs finishing 10 and 12th. Here are the results of that race with the CCS's best riders in their premier class:

The AMA FX 600's will be faster...lots faster, but remember that the XBRR is in its infancy. Jeff Wood, the winner of this race usually gets beat easily by M4 Emgo Suzuki riders, Geoff May and Michael Barnes in this class on non-FX prepped 600's, so the XBRRs have a ways to go before they can be considered serious challengers in that class.
I am going to the ASRA/CCS races at Summit Point on May 28-29, which is on a Sunday and Monday. A bud and I will be riding up from KY, me on my Buell S2. I have ridden to the area before and the WV roads are spectacular. We will be camping at the track...come on and join the fun. It is pretty cheap too. Anyone who is in the KY vicinity or who would like to meet along the way and ride with us are welcome...regardless of what brand you ride.

Road Racer X magazine has a very good article in the May/June '06 issue, entitled "Party Crashers--Inside Buell's FX Effort". It gives an inside-the-pit view of the pre-race and qualifying as well as the "anti-climax" race day. They said that Jeremy McWilliams bike had an alternator trigger failure...what the heck is that? They also said that the bike will probably be protested as soon as it has a good finish. This is a worth while read.

The XBRR's didn't race in that race. Only the endurance race I believe. The Buells listed above were not RR's, just plain old Buell XB racing bikes. |

Hmm. Crevier finished 5th in that ASRA Superbike race, but doesn't show up on that scoring -- perhaps because he still hasn't paid a CCS/ASRA fine for entering a wrong race at Daytona. He had a horrificly bad start from the back row, with the shifter tip of his aftermarket shift lever falling off, and it took him awhile to figure out how to shift using the side of the lever. After he got into it, he was running laps substantially faster than the leaders, and was moving up on 4th place on the last lap when he overcooked a turn, ran wide, and lost some time gathering it back up.

I don't think that any AMA infraction would affect the ASRA/CCS standings, so why isn't Crevier's 5th place standing in the race showing up on the results. I can say that the numerous classes of ASRA/CCS are very confusing to me and I have been going to them for years. Could it have been another race that Crevier scored the 5th place in?
Will the XBRRs be at Summit Point, WV on the weekend of May 28-29 for more testing? I will be there just in case. Seems like they are still trying to come up with a slipper clutch/cush drive for these bikes. Why can't they just do it the old fashioned way and feather the clutch manually, matching the rpms on the downshifts? I know Mike Ciccotto knows how to do this, as he is old school Buell.
I am still thinking that the rear hub cush drive may start looking pretty good before this is all over. How much of a disadvantage could a couple of pounds of unsprung weight on the rear wheel be, when all of the fast factory guys are using the same set-up? It doesn't seem to be slowing DiSalvo or Josh down much. Or Ben Spies for that matter.

Every dollar saved is pure profit... It makes a LOT more sense to get a better system worked out. That way you can put the dollar in the bank and keep it and it's interest for years  . |

OK , using a banking analogy, what if the interest rate the bank drops below the rate of inflation, so that the dollar you saved is actually worth less in a few years. Wouldn't it have been better to invest that dollar in something that will work for you in the short run?
