I've got SX 4800 miles ridden. I have recently noticed that my bikes performance varies. Also fuel consumption varies. When I bought the bike everything was ok. Engine had good power even under 4000rpm. While first 1000 miles something happened, I felt lack of torque and fuel consumption was about 6 litres per 100km (=20% more than it had been). First I thought that it was only in my head but recently I have noticed that sometimes there are loads of power and engine revs easier. Also fuel consumption is smaller because I don't need to turn throttle that much. But usually engine lacks performance.. When riding twisty roads I need to use 4th gear to keep up good speed. When engine feels ok I can easily use 5th. Lack of power can also be noticed when accelerating on 1st and 2nd gears - wheelies are much harder to do. Any experts there? Maybe some sensor is broken? |

In most cases I believe a broken sensor would turn on the CE light. The bike does make noticeably more power once warmed up (or at least my '04 12R does). Maybe you mostly notice this on short rides? |

Do you get your fuel from the same station every time? Is it really humid when the power is down? |

yea, fuel is my guess too. See if you notice a difference from tank full to tank full. Shoot, I just noticed the other night when I filled up, I got bad gas...I mean in the bike. I can only run Shell high test, or Mobil High test in mine, all others run like crap. But the other night, using Shell high test where I've filled up before without a problem, I got a bad tank of gas..AND it's humid as hell here now too making it worse. I need to get a can of that Octane Booster stuff to start throwing in there when I get bad gas. It seems to happen alot around here...and man, it does run like crap when it doesn't like the gas. And yes, your fuel consumption will go up, cuz your revving it more to keep it running at idle (red lights, stop signs...) and having to rev it higher when cruising just to keep the power up and to keep it from bucking on ya. |

Chevron Techron. You can get it at the Auto Parts store. Cleans out your injectors really well. Follow the instructions for it. |

Problem is not because of fuel. It is just random when the bike runs well. I thought is there some temperature sensor somewhere? If that could be loose or broken so engine gets wrong air fuel mix.. Also lack of power occurs even if engine was warm. On shorter rides power is more often ok. |

My X1 broke down once due to the engine temp sensor rattling loose. It was still connected to the ECU so there weren't any fault codes. It was telling the ECU wrong values though. Check your intake air sensor and your engine temp sensor. I think they still put the engine temp sensors in about the same place: rear head. |

Just so were covering our bases here, have you made any modifications to the bike? Also check your O2 sensor. |

Hi again, And thanks for answers. I lost my license for a while after last post. And then came winter here in Finland. So have not been able to ride for a while. I am posting because this problem described above still is not solved... After winter the bike was ok again for some time. I got race ecm and jardine installed and the bike went totally crazy in positive way. Then again performance started to suck. The bike runs basically ok, but just has not the "beast" in it.. Here are the symptoms: 1. Poor idle running when engine cold 2. poor fuel consumption (5.5litres vs normal 4.5 per 100km) 3. More backfiring (you notice this with Jardine easier vs stock muffler) 4. Poor performace generally (does not rev well, no grunt) 5. Sound is not as sharp and loud as normally (this can be noticed also easier with jardine) I think this cannot be because of mods. This occurred also before. Now the performance difference is bigger than normal. Symptoms could be because bike runs too rich air/fuel ratio? If so why.. I was wondering could it be: 1. broken/dirty O2 sensor 2. TPS problem (this was adjusted at local dealer after installing race ecm and some time all worked fine, not anymore. BUT there was not any error codes??) 3. Some other sensor Hmmm. It now popped to my mind that it was before first wash this year when all worked fine. Could it be that there is water/humidity somewhere that causes this. Maybe in O2 sensor (btw where is it located?) I am not sure about this wash thing because it is hard to tell excatly when symptoms start. Thanks for answers in advance! |

The o2 sensor is located on the rear exhaust pipe. Some of these have been known to have the wires stretched a litle tight. Also you mentioned the air temp sensor. It is in your air box sticking up through the base plate. |

Ok. Thanks. I'll have to inspect O2.. Air temp sensor I could find. Btw I have also modified air intake a little. It is kind of hillbilly fast system. But air temp sensor above thermal mat. |
