the bike has 20k and so far its been good.
i noticed a month ago but did not think of it much.this past weekend i went riding.
and it readys tarted going bad. when i was on the highway goingat 60-80 no problem, yet when we went on the back roads and started to go uphill specially the bike started to pop like it was not getting fuel.
then we we reached at stop signs the bike would be fine but as soon as i tried to accelerate it would sound like it choked and it kills the engine.
I got home and chaged the plugs thinking it was that and noticed one of the plugs was rusted off the tip. well the new plugs did not help.
i noticed when i start the bike too it goes up to 1300rpm and then after a min it drops to around 900 which feels normal.
any suggestions thanks. i know this might be dumb but i thought this was fuel injected, could the throtle need a cleaning i know i have done this with cars, but im new to bikes and i am hesitant to use carb cleaner!

Can you describe more about the plug being rusted at the tip? The engine end of the plug, or the wire end of the plug? How bad was it? |

Sounds as though your fuel filter may be clogged. If it runs at idle and when you call for more fuel, it starves out.
It isnt unreasonable for a fuel filter to go bad in 20k miles depending on the fuel you have purchased.
You could try running some techron or other fuels system cleaner to see if it helps, but my guess is the filter. |

reepicheep, it was rusted at the wire end of the plug. it was so bad that when i took the wire off the tip of the plug fell off.
lorazepan I onli use high octane 93 gas for my XB, but I had thought of the filter too myself. i will give it a try .
as far as techron, is that an additive that goes in the fuel tank?

yes techron is an additive you can get at the cage parts store. Dont put the whole bottle in, just small amounts over a couple tank fulls.
Helps clean the fuel system.
If you bought gas where someone doesnt take care of the pumps and tanks properly, you can get water and debris in the filter. Premium is no guarantee you cant get stuff in the gas. It is why the filter is there to begin with. |

Thats good, thats the cheap end of the plug to have fall apart 
If that were me, I would probably be replacing that plug wire, might as well do both at the same time. There is going to be a lot of corrosion in there at this point, and while you can clean it, you will probably have a hard time keeping it clean.
It still could be anything at this point, here would be my approach:
1) Replace the plug wires. I don't think that is this particular problem, but it is *a* problem, and I always fix the known broke stuff first just in case the issue at hand is a non obvious additional symptom.
2) Slap a reasonably sensitive DVM on the battery, and watch it slowly go down with the headlights on and the bike not running. After 5 minutes or so of that, start the bike idling and make sure the voltage is slowly going back up. I don't think this (stator) is the problem either, but it's a 10 minute test that can eliminate a whole subsystem as being part of the problem.
3) I would then be to where I suspect your problem really is... the fuel system. I would verify I have good gas. I would check the venting system to make sure the tank can draw air in as fuel goes out. Then I would check fuel lines for obvious external damage. Then I would check fuel pump pressure, filters, then injectors. I would make sure the air filter is not plugged as well.

well i am waiting for my fuel filetr to get delivered. so far. new plugs, air filter and plug wires and still is acting up. not as bad.
I was doing some reading and notced the the current idle when i start the bike is about 900rpm. i was wondering if i adjust it to be what the specs say 1050 to 1200 that might fix the problem?.
i will however try the fuel filter and see what happens once i get it.
oh i tried the fuel cleaner too, fi ti did anyhtign i did was not major to notice it. |

its fixed, i took it to HD washington and they reset the stp and something else. this however did not fix all but at least it kept it from dying when i stopped at a red light and tried to accelerate again.
today i got the wires and replaced them and i could tell the automatic change.
it started at consistent 1000 rpm without hicuuping. as i changed the wires I also noticed the rubber boot that is mounted on the throtle as not seated firmly and i could see a gap of 1/8" letting air, i suspect this might have had somehting to do also. I also used brake cleaner and dapmped it on a rag and carefully wipped the throtle. I fifure if it was stiking this will let it roll freely.

Wow, I have been experiencing the same thing with mine and was getting ready to post a new thread about this. Thanks to everyone that posted a response! I just got the bike and was starting to get really nervous. |
