Either I read or someone told me the XB12 motor is good for 50k. Mine's stock. Got some Amsoil & a K&N oil filter. No garage but I have a top-half cover in the mail. Picked up my frame pucks today. Any other tips on how to extend the bike's life and protect from loss or damage? Maybe I should get an alarm? Don't want a disc lock, it would be just like me to forget it was on. Does the leanness of the stock motor setup shorten engine life? If so, how to fix? (Message edited by kurosawa on April 13, 2006) |

Motor should be good for more than 50K. I'm at 28K and still going strong on my XB9. |

41K here on a xb9r. I think "Betty"'s got plenty of miles left in 'er. |

XB9 are much more reliable than XB12, I think... |

I put 60K on my '98 S3 and it was running flawlessly when I traded it on my '00 M2. My M2 out in the garage has 55K on it, and it's running fine. The XB motors are better and more reliable than the earlier engines, so I expect a trouble free engine for at least 100K and probably a lot longer than that. |

"XB9 are much more reliable than XB12" Any FACTS to substantiate that statement ??? |

over 42thousand on my XB9S, no problems other than the stator going out at 20thousand. New12r and Shred both have XB12Rs and no engine troubles. Note that none of the 3%er's bike are babied, and get a LOT of miles on them. I would think with regular care they should last WELL over 50thousand miles. |

I don't think there is another motorcycle in existence that could honestly be characterized as being "much more" reliable than an XB12. |

It's pretty simple. An engine case, pistons, con rods, valvetrain, crankshaft, bearings, etc....what would make it less reliable than anything else out there? Don't let people tell you that because it's aircooled it is less reliable. There are scores of air-cooled engines out there with hundreds of thousands of miles on them (think Harley, VW Beetle, BMW boxers, etc). Do the maintenance and the engine shouldn't give you any trouble. A friend of mine has a Suzuki Bandit 1200 with over 100,000 miles on it and he beats the living snot out of it. |

One clutch issue(from doing burnouts) and a relay problem out of 30k of serious abuse, I ride my bike like it is stolen everyday, I mean everyday! Lots of wheelies, thursday was over a 1/2 mile at 12 o'clock numerous times, stoppies, track days, burnouts, off road( I know it is not a Uly but sometimes you gotta pee!) and lots of bumps on the rev limiter. I think my bike is reliable. In fact I think I will go beat her now, gotta pay some bills. |

A correctly tuned and properly maintained air cooled engine should last over 100K miles IF you don't over rev it or otherwise abuse it in any way. I rode a Big Twin Evo over the grand mark and I did wind it up over 5 grand on more than a few occasions. Also, the stock fuel injection does not run lean unless you do other mods and you do not correct it. Using synthetic oil helps extend life also. |
