Faceplate, open belt drive lathe. I am impressed with a classic that still produces. Watch those fingers! |

Mr Saw -- Classic? I ain't THAT old OOooooo -- you mean the lathe! it's a Dalton -- from the research I've done (no surprise there is a virtual community devoted to the old crates), it was built in 1914 -- the ways are worn, the babbits need repouring, and the nuts all gots lots of backlash, but it's capable of doing far better work than the operator ;-} you bet I watch my fingers! how else would I turn the cranks? |

Bomber Never heard of a Dalton, am familiar with South Bend, Lodge and Shipley, Sidney, American and others. Used to operate, install, repair, and rebuild them in a past occupation. Haven't run a machine tool for over 10 years now. You have the equipment make some new nuts. Regards Mr. H.Saw |

Mr Saw -- Dalton only lasted through the 20s or early 30s, from I know - small outfit outa New York, built on the cheap, not really industrial grade -- I'm guessing, like in the woodworking arena, there were enough "gentleman machinists" who used the gear for a hobby that Dalton could survive for a bit -- as one example of the quality of thier gear, the ways are not hardened (!) as for the quipment to make new nuts, yep, I surely do -- I expect to do land-office bidness in the new nut market this summer, what wiht the rapidly aging status of most of my buddies and all |

Mr. Bomber Well Dalton not being industrial sorta explains why I never heard of them. I assume you have change gears for cutting threads? Sounds like a Dalton may be like an Atlas lathe. Better stock up on brass nut material now, prices are skyrocketing up. Mr. H. Saw |

Hack (since we've carried on such a lengthy corespondance, I think we can revert to a first name basis, don't you?) yep, got the change gears, and a nifty engraved brass plate on the lathe that specifies what goes where -- now all I gotta do is figure out what the "Stud" gear and all the ogther terminaologies refer to, and I'll be rockin ;-} very much like a low end Atlas -- I'd trade the old dear for something in bette shape, but, hey, it's been around a lil longer than me, so I owe it some repsect ;-} |

Hello all......just couldn't stand it ....had to jump in with my two cents. I have an old Barnes lathe which was made in the early 1900's also. It's had a hard life but as Bomber said it's better than I am. As you can see it's been "modified" to work in my very cluttered garage. Once a guy gets used to one of these it would be hard to do without! With the help of some swamp cooler parts it works pretty well. I've never posted a picture, so this ought to be interesting

RT -- cumon, now, bud -- I most definately do NOT pre-date the common use of iron -- magnesium, you bet; titanium, certainly; aluminum, pritnear; you be nice, now, or I'll only bring out the 12 year old sctoch ;-} Nort -- more pics of the old crate, please! |

Back again with a couple more pics. As you can see someone long ago did some slicing and dicing on it to gain more "swing" I believe is the term......but it doesn't seem to bother it at all. There seems to be enough frame under it all to support it. I'm in the process of getting a storage shed to eliminate the clutter and then I plan on having a little workshop. I'll bet I have you all beat in the "older than dirt category". I retired this last December 30th from NDOT with 31 years......now it's time to play a little and ride the Buell more

Check this out: 6" Dalton Metal Lathe With all accessories, $450 firm. http://www.bangornews.com/classifieds/results.cfm?ssubclass=440 That lathe is probably in the Bangor, Maine area, the ad's been running for a few days now, and the telephone number is in area 207. I have not called on it and don't know anything more than you see there. Jack Six hours later and I'm adding a note to this, this lathe has been sold so don't bother to call on it. Nort, you may not be older than dirt, but you're about 4 years older than me! That lathe does indeed look like a lot of fun. One day I'm going to move up to full-size machinery, but it ain't gonna happen until I build my dream garage... rt |

Nort You are correct the gap increases the swing. Original Gapbed lathes have been manufactured by lathe companies in the past. I would imagine you can still find a Manufacturer that makes them. I have seen one lathe that was a Gapbed that the ways slid out to make the length that you could turn longer, as well as more swing. Hack |
