DISCLAIMER: Taking apart your dashboard may void your warranty and make your bike spontaneously combust. Do so at your own risk. I was inspired by a thread a while back with some graphics from Hillbilly-Motors Motors IIRC. Sadly, only marked in KPH. I took apart my dash, scanned it in and converted it to vector art. It's about 99.7% dead on off my printer. If you use the template, you may have to make minor adjustments to the scale. Some printers shrink the file a skoosh. Attached file is a JPEG of the original Adobe Illustrator CS2 EPS. The BadWeb only allows 71k for an attachment. Zipped the file is less than 200K. If someone has the web space to host more file types, I'll send you some earlier AI versions, a PDF, and a generic EPS, which will be far more useful than a JPEG!

Some tinkering in Illustrator. I'm using the bottom graphic in my dash right now. Currently a color print on card stock hand cut with an X-Acto. I'll try something more durable in the near future. |

Emails away! I'll shoot some pics this afternoon, and before I forget to mention, the graphic on the middle JPEG above is shamelessly stolen from HD's Saints to Sinners Ride, and the bottom one is one of the chicks from Sin City. The flames, of course, are just flames! |

Just to offer another idea, I did some modifications by scanning the template from my xb9. I edited the image in photoshop and them printed it out on a transparency sheet. It worked out fine with the silver background of the 9 dash. It also lights up nicely. I'll probably still play with this one since you've given me a clean slate to work with. Thanks guys! |

Is there any way of printing out a full size version of the flame template from Chainsaw's post? |

That looks amazing - How difficult is it to remove the indicator needles from the gauges? And is there any concern about fading of the inkjet colors over time? Maybe a color laser would be the way to go... mmm laser mmmm |

TopGun: AI CS2 EPS file on it's way shortly. About 6 megs. Stormtrooper: Indicator needles pull straight up and off. I've taken the dash apart about 4 times now. Remove and replace them at "0". The speedo needle always comes off with the pin attached, the RPM needle doesn't. Been out and about all afternoon looking for a dash bulb for my XB. It's marked "TS". Anyone know where I can get one? |

To finish my post-whoring for the day, attached pictures of the dash. You might notice I've got a bulb out on the tach side. Blue bulbs would make this look pretty cool. For you DIY guys, plan on designing something that looks good with the yellow/orange backlight.
The first backlit picture looks pretty harsh. The second has a small adjustment. Note the inset.
I photocopied the halftones on the back of the original dash, laminated it, and stuck it to the back of the color print. Makes a huge difference in the quality of the light. I went around the edges of the odometer hole and such with a black marker. |

...is it the right size if i print it out? do i need to enlarge or decrease the size of it?. File is actual size and about 99.7% dead-on off my printer. Printers tend to shrink the art by a fractional percent. You may need to make a miniscule scale adjustment to compensate. The dash cover hides the edges pretty well so you don't have to be perfect. |

Pupu, You will need Adobe Photoshop/Illustrator to *really* do anything with these files. It's a little complex, I can just about find my way around it after much time! You can download a 30 day tryout from www.adobe.com (330megs!!) At least you would be able to open and print the files in Chainsaws latest .zip (there's 2 very good ones already to go included) and adding your own text if not images would be fairly simple. Chainsaw is obviously more than capable at throwing photoshop around, perhaps he or someone else here could give you some fast track info on this particular job? I've had great fun with this today....It's well worth it. Mark. |
