I was crossing the Bay Bridge into San Francisco late night but took a while to get through.How bad is it for my air cooled XB9SX to sorta idle like that.Didn't overheat,kept running.Ran fine and got home fine.Is that bad for my oil?

How long did it idle for? With the current weather in Bay Area there will be no problem whatsoever. The temp is at most 45 - 50degF, correct?

You have a fan on the bike that will run to cool the rear drum down. Believe me, it works. Mine's ran and turned off in stop and go traffic, so it does cool it down. I wouldn't worry about it overheating. It also has a skip spark mode in case it get's to hot. If you don't reach that mode your fine.

just did the same..thinking wow, someone actually tried to steal something while waiting at a toll booth. glad thats not the case. as for the fan you should be fine. they work extremely well. my leg still gets hot after a while though..lol

I've been stuck for in 100+ temps with my non-fan equipped tuber. If it did overheat, there was no way for me to know it. The only thing I notice is that oil consumption goes way up in very hot weather - check your oil more frequently to account for it.

What are the symptoms of overheating anyway?

Dj, most likely yours will do a skip spark should it get to hot. You'll know when that happens.

what I find really cool is the way the fan reverses. when you are in motion and temp
switch reaches temp it blows toward the rear of the bike, working with natural air flow.
When the bike is stopped it runs in the opposite direction pulling air from under
the tail to cool the rear cylinder. That is a brilliant design team in action,.

Dude, you have got to be kidding me. First time I have heard about this. This is so smart and E. Buell should put that in the Buell.com site as part of his smart design.

So how does the bike know if it is stopped or going? At what speed does the fan reverses?

the fan is controlled by the ecm. They have a patent on the fan cooling system.

My brother and I noticed it while looking at the software for the "true" race ecm.
Not that we run a fan on the race bike. just thought it was cool.

Dia, what do you mean by "true" race ecm? Is it diff. from the race ecm that Buell sells?

I'm talking about the licensed racer only ecm. It is the unlocked programmable ecm.

I'm pretty certain that they do reverse. If I read it right that is part of the basis for the patent.
It should be pretty easy to check and see.

Yeah it was cold 45-55F that night.the fan was on and off.I guess it's ok after you guys clue me in.I got worried cause a fella I was chatting with when I got to the 4 corner stop said that he turned around and head back to his camp ground when there was gridlock in a biker festival due to an accident.He said it was bad for his aircooled Harley to be idling in 90-100 degree weather.Thank you guys.
