5k service done yesterday at the dealership. I went on a 200-mile ride today and noticed that my fan was running more than usual. It was 70 degrees today, but it was still running more than I have seen on similar days. I decided to check the oil when I got home. This is how much oil I had to remove to get the level to the top of the FULL range.

Would this have caused the engine to run hot? What other problems could overservicing cause?

Lowflyer,
You might be OK. I hear the Buell stunters fill their bikes "overfull" to prevent oil starvation when the bikes are vertical. Its good you caught it, though.

I ALWAYS double check any service I get whether its the truck, car, bike whatever...(guess I have a hard time trusting people). If you want the job done right, its usually best just to do it yourself. A good lesson from my father!

I am not sure how big that container is there, but it looks like they may have put a whole 3 quarts in instead of the specified 2.5.

That happened to me and I didn't check it right away. I actually put quite a few miles on it. I popped the airbox off one day and noticed a mess and checked my oil. I drained it and filled it to the proper level. I ran it for a while, checked again, repeated this several times until I was satisfied that it was okay. They listed on my service sheet the correct amount when I double checked it, so I think someone had a brainfart. Luckily their brainfart didn't cost me.

I just checked the airbox and all is well. I usually double-check everything too. I was more worried about tire pressures when I headed out for the ride this morning and figured I would check the oil on the ride. I actually noticed the over-service at the gas stop, but was unsure of just how full it was. I wasn't all that worried about it, but it does torque me a little that a tech would make such a stupid mistake.

The container is marked for 8 oz. I am thinking there is about 12 oz. there since it is well past the top mark.

Tell her that you didn't get pissed when she used your oil siphon tool on the Thanksgiving day bird, so what's the big deal.

My Uly got overfilled on it's one and only dealer service (1st service) and it got overfilled a reasonable amount. I ignored it and now have a leak on the front rocker cover. I also had a rattle that I took to the dealer to see what he thought before I did a 1500 mile trip, he suggested that I look for it, but still go on the trip, which I did (took the trip, but the rattle can wait). Had a great trip, near wore myself out taking all the great backroads over distances longer than I'm used to and unfamiliar roads, lots of concentration required all day. Had a ball...now where was I, overserviced....I don't like anyone except me working on my bike.

I thought when I bought the bike that I'd have little time to ride it; let alone work on it. I generally work 50-60 hours every week. So, I bought the prepaid maintenance package. It has worked out well until now. I have always worked on all of my vehicles, built my own engines, overhauled trannies, etc...I was also an aircraft mechanic for my first 3 years in the AF. I am finding as I have gotten older, I enjoy that sort of thing less and less.

shucks, you guys are complaining about your oil getting overfilled?

if i didnt know any better, i swear the the clowns who did my 1k tune up added air to my brake lines, detuned my engine, dropped some shit in there to rattle and did some other silly things.

id be ecstatic if all they did was add too much ail. :P

Hello Opto,

From my years of Buell and Sportster ownership - and from reading lists like this one - I'd say the #1 cause of rocker gasket leaks is getting on the gas hard before the bike has fully warmed up. The bolts in the aluminum heads (steel?) don't expand at the same rate, it's my understanding that until the engine is thoroughly warmed up the proper operating torque on won't be achieved.

I don't see how overfilling oil would in any way cause a rocker gasket leak.

I put many thousands of miles on my Sportster with no rocker leaks, and tens of thousands on my Buell S2 with no rocker leaks. I always allow the bike to warm up gently and ride it very gently for the first 15 miles or so. Often more.

If you ride similarly then I'd guess someone botched the gasket installation. It is possible.

Best,

Jim in Santa Barbara

Thanks Jim,
Well I can stop kicking myself for not pulling out some oil then. I've also had Sportster and then Buell for 10 years and this is my first rocker cover leak ever, thought it was something that happened to other people. I don't give them any decent throttle until warm so I guess it is a one-off. I hate going in for warranty. Chris I could tell you a few real stories but prefer not to. That's why I do my best to stay away. I was relieved when the Lightning ran out of warranty.

I take it there is no real harm from an overfill. I wasn't paying attention as i filled the swing arm with a 1 gallon container. It overflowed. I tilted the bike to try and get as much out as possible. I didn't have a baster. It is still registering in the overfill on the dipstick.

How much oil can the crank hold if it were in an upright position? Just curious. Dealers have the bikes vertical on the bike lift when they are doing service.
