I have a 03 Lightning and was thinking of upgrading to the new 06 belt. Given that this new belt is supposed to be so durable, I would like to run without the belt guard, which looks stupid to me. Has anyone done this? Any thoughts or suggestions? Thanks |

I did remove mine and so far no problem at all. Even I do aware of the possible stone damaging the belt. I would rather remove it anyway. Also the biggest benefit of removing the guard is the ease of belt access since if the guard stays, it is PITA to work with it! Looks a lot better without the guard. |

I put the new 06 belt on my 03S but i bought and put only the lower belt guard. Just to protect it from stone damage |

I've had the belt guards off of my 03 for over a year...so far no problem and the original belt is still in good shape. I know it is there for a reason but I'll take my chances. |

Guard be gone on mine as well. No issues despite snapping a belt once. Actually the belt exited the bike clean. |

i removed the top guard (no lube to sling) but left the bottom guard (little more protection from rocks). sorta get the look without ditching all the 'protective' parts. if i ever did a chain conversion i'd have it the exact opposite. but screw chains (for street), i love not dealing with maintenance in that area! thanks Erik!! |

Can the guard be removed without tire removal? |

yes to the lower guard. The upper guard may be able to be removed with the wheel on, but it would come off faster if you yanked the wheel off. If I remember correctly, it was tight between the tire and the bolts on the swingarm. Oh, you can take off the swingarm brace, then yank the upper guard. It's a snap if you have had your swingarm brace off before. If you haven't I suggest taking off the brake side peg bracket to give you a straight shot at the inner brace bolt (next to the shock)to avoid stripping the socket head of the upper bolt |

I am convinced. I am going to call Al and get the parts to convert to an 06 set up with the polished rear set and no guards. Probably stick the CF rear hugger on it while I am at it. Thanks for the input guys! |

Did you polish that muffler? Looks like Buell Race muffler? If so, what process did you use? |

That is the stock finish on the Race muffler for a 12. part number is 65218-03Y. If you want a new one, better hurry...they are being discontinued. Or just ask around on the boards and watch eBay. |
