This should be a fun one to figure out. This morning went to start her up. First thing I notice is that my tripmeter is zeroed out. Then I take off and my speedo is not working. Ok, tach still works, we dont need no steenkin speedo or tripmeter. Went to leave work at lunch and bike wouldnt start at first. Nothing at all. Then it did start and I noticed high beams are not working but the low beams are. Went to start it again and it wouldnt start again, then after about 6 tries it mysteriously starts. I live on a dirt road with washboards so I am thinking something in the wiring harness may have jiggled loose. I will have to check all the connections tonight. These are seemingly unrelated though so I should have a good time tracking it down. Any thoughts on where to start? |

check your battery connections (especially ground), then your battery -- sounds like it could be slowly leaving this mortal coil |

Also check the connection of the battery cable to the starter. The connector at the starter has been known to break.. |

I had similar problems on my 2001 M2. I removed the battery, cleaned up the electrical connections and replaced the fuses I thought were troublesome. It worked and it only cost me a few bucks for the fuses and took about fifteen minutes. Try some electrical grease as well, it seems to keep things clean and in the right place. |

BTW I just read your profile to see what you're riding. Semper Fi. And although I did come to really hate the stumps (0311, 2d Bn, 5th Mar) I bet there's alot of nice riding around there. |

Semper Fi to you Elmono. I thought about retiring in TX. My son and 1st wife live in Spring. I have other commitments that keep me in CA though. Besides, this desert grows on you. Thanks for the help guys. I will start tearing into it a little tonight and this gives me a place to start looking. |

Another place to look is the voltage reg wires behind the cam cover. There's a brass fitting off the oil pump that's sharp and will rub right through causing many of things that your talking bout. |

Pick up a small tube of Dielectric compound at a auto parts store. As you pull connectors apart, clean what looks like it needs it with a small bronze bristled brush. Dip or lightly coat the male side of all inline connectors with Dielectric as you reconnect them. That will give good protection against corrosion and they will also go together more easily. I never put any connectors back together with some light cleaning and the compound. Jack |
