It appears that Harley has another recall going. In the most recent edition of Hog Tales, there is a notice that Fisher-Price is recalling about 218,000 Power Wheels Harley-Davidson motorcycle battery powered ride-ons, apparently for a foot pedal that sticks in the on position. Twice today I've heard the rumour(from two different sources)that the shock on '99X1s will be recalled. Remember when we argued why 2000 X1s were being recalled and not '99s? Thats what I want to know too. I kinda have a hard time beliving that the shocks are different from the '99 to the 2000's. They look just the same. There is no recall for 99X1 shocks at this time. The only 99s with recalled shocks are M2s. The issue is not supposed to be the shocks being bad but instead the vibrations caused by lighter flywheels in 00 models. Acharacter: The rear brake line recall is because of where the line is routed. It is routed between the oil tank and the frame, where it could rub. The recall says that you get a brake line with a protective sleve over it and to re-route the line itself. Always good to check the line to make sure no signs of wear. Hope this helps. Installing Race Tech fork springs today in my 99 Thunderbolt (Thanks for the help Cap!) I noticed that my rear shock puked a small puddle of oil since last Saturdays's ride. I decide I'll go ahead and call the dealership to set up an appointment to get a few things all done at once ....   DAve: My '99 Thunderbolt's rear shock is puking oil from the rear of the can. I understand that Buell has seen this a number of times and will replace it at no charge. Could you tell me if you have the replacement shock in stock so that I can make an appointment to have it replaced? I also heard there's an upgraded muffler mount Buell will install and I'm interested in a recall going on concerning the Buell Race muffler. Service Manager: I guess I can go ahead and put the exhaust hanger upgrade on. The Race muffler recall is just a strap around the muffler with a cable connecting to the engine and I "think" we can do that too. As far as the leaking shock goes, I need to see the bike first and then we'll go from there. We'll also have to wait on parts and there's no telling how long that'll take. We definitely don't have one of those shocks in stock. DAve: Do you mean I have to ride my Buell there with a leaking shock, just so you can see it? Only then will you contact Buell to see if they'll replace it at no charge to me? Then you'll contact me once the parts arrive and you're saying there's no telling how long that will take? Service Manager: YES. I need to see that bike first before we do anything. DAve: Ya know it's over 100 miles round trip for me just for you to see it. Can I E-mail you some pictures? I have a digital camera right here. Service Manager: There's nothing I can do until I see the shock. You need to bring the bike by first. DAve: OK, I'll see about coming by. Do I need an appointment? Service Manager: Nope. I only need to see it long enough to determine the shock is leaking oil. DAve: There's no way I can get something started or on order before you see it? The BEST Way is through a dealer. If you are on shaky terms with YOUR dealer, ask another. But, trust me, calling the "dealer only" number is like calling the hot-line to the White House and asking Bush what an Austin BBQ place is serving for lunch. And, that's as it should be. They are set up to work with things like dealer numbers, etc. Their TRUTHFUL "this number is for dealers only and not for customers" reponse could be MISINTERPRETED as bad service, when in fact it's a very honest answer. Court, I hear what you are saying about working with the dealer...but what happens when you don't know enough about your bike to judge whether or not a recall has been performed? Heck, I'm not even sure what all HAS been recalled on this bike. I'm not saying my dealer is trying to screw me, but in asking about recall work I am just re-assured "Yeah, it's all been done.", but there is no paperwork or anything to back that up. Part of what leaves me non-plussed is that the "Yeah, all recall work has been done." crew has had my hard luggage for 4 ***weeks*** while waiting for latches. Now wasn't this stuff recalled like 2 years ago? If the latches haven't been done, what ELSE has been glossed over or convienently 'forgotten'? As time goes on and I spend more time wrenching and riding (as opposed to WENCHING and riding...which is completely different) I will get more familiar with the bike and know what I should be looking for/at. DN: don't confuse recalls with goodwill warranties. I don't know for sure, but I suspect the bag latches were not recalled. Generally they only perform a recall if there's a safety concern. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

Dark: Good point. I'd be willing to bet that your dealer can go to HDNET, enter the VIN and print a copy of the recall status of a given VIN. The dealers HAVE a stake in this. And NO, you can't have my password hehehehehe..... If the dealer really can't get you any info, I'd WRITE a letter (letters are much better than phone calls) to Deanne Mattews at Buell. I just had a 2001 rear shock recall done on my '99 M2. It is called a "cosmetic update" and buell will pay for it. They should have sent out cards to the owners notifying the owners. I've got a '99 X1 that just went in to the shop for some recalls. They are replacing my rear shock, adding an extention on the idle adjustment and replacing my swing arm. Stopped into Waterloo HD/Buell and asked about the recall on the shock for my 00X1 on Tues.They said drop it off Thursday morning and go have breakfast. I came back in 2 hrs.(love them buffets) and bs'd with Dave the Buell sales guy,and kicked a few tires.In a total of 3 hrs. had a new 01 shock,01 muff bracket and new cooler plugs.
