You can use the OEM XB 9 Primary Sprocket (35T) and chain to get extra torque. But a tuned XB 12 comes definatly to short with that.

"comes definately too short with that?" Too low of a top speed? Gearing too close together?

Basically it is shortening up each gear just like when stunters put those huge sprockets on their bikes. You will have more torque and more power overall, but you will run out of gear terribly fast. Without the extra revs that the 9 has those gear ratios will feel very short. You probably will barely even use first gear any more. If you want more power the better route to go is the performance mods available from the board sponsors. They just got a 12 up to 100 rear wheel hp with the Micron, K&N, Open Airbox and the directlink system that Dave, Al and some of the other people on the board have been working on. I don't recall what the torque number was, but it was very impressive for rear wheel numbers. If that set up is a little more than you want to spend there are less expensive options that will still get you within 5-10 hp of those numbers, but I believe as it stands the Micron is king (Currently).

I agree with adding more power if it's feasible. However, it is an inexpensive mod...maybe $250 I think, and will get you some more snap. The upside is it wont affect your speedo. Also, you're only losing like 10%, so if your used to cruising at 4,000rpm in 5th, you'd be at 4,400rpm with the 9 primary in there. Approx. anyway.

Our experiences with the XB 12 with the long stroke and the limiter at 6800 is that, if you run the bike with open air and exhaust, it runs very quick in the limiter anyway if you are able to shift upwards racestyle quick.

If you add good running ported heads it really starts to sucks with the XB 12 stock ratio. Because your ride is a bah-bah-bah -always in the limiter.

I think the XB 9 ratio is ok for stunts or hillblimbing, but nothing for a good running XB 12.
