After a two day 800 mile ride last week, I ended up with tendonitis from gripping the throttle too tight for too long. My last touring bikes either had cruise control or a throttlemeister. Has anyone installed a cruise control on the Uly? I have used a throttle rocker before but would prefer one a bit safer. |

Have you tried a CrampBuster? |

I use a throttle rocker...never had an issue with it. On a twisty road, I'll move it out of the way or remove it and toss it in my tank bag. Audiovox makes a cruise control that can be adapted to motorcycles. The FJR guys used to do it all the time. Check out the instructions here: http://moto1.micapeak.com/bike/FJR1300/howto/audiovox.html |

I took off the airbox and disconnected the big throttle return spring down by the throttle body. Done it on my 9R, did it on the 12X. Throttle returns fine and it's a whole lot more comfy. |

Chad, Are you sure that link is not how to make a pipe bomb? |

Nope...you have to use something for a vacuum chamber, and that particular person used PVC pipe. |

I have a Vista Cruise for a Yamaha, (I think)I bought it about 7 years ago and now have used it on 3 different bikes. It is a throttle lock and not really a "cruise control". It is very simple to use and install. However, on the Uly it requires a little modification. You have to trim off the tabs that go around the throttle cable to keep the unit in place and drill a small hole in the outer throttle housing and Vista Cruise to match. I used I believe an #8-32 machine screw trimmed to about an 1/8 in. When chamfered it will run into the plastic and self tap. Using the proper size drill. |

I am sort of interested in the Audiovox option. |

So lowflyer, maybe you should build up that limp wrist, and you wont need a speed control. |

It's not that the wrist is limp, it's more of a calloused build-up of cartilage in the wrist that makes it near immovable. I suffer from the long term effects of FMS. I am actually on a partial disability for it through the VA.

I blame the lack of quality FMT. Hell, the pages in my FMT Manual were stuck together, so I never read the warnings. |

I heard of someone putting an elastic hairband between the grip and the electrical controls. This caused enough drag so that he could release the grip and have the throttle stay put. |

I'm with Lowflyer on the Crampbuster. You can ride with your hand fully relaxed as the turning force is on the heel of your palm. Very slight changes at your wrist controls speed and it becomes subconscious. It is quickly adjusted for position or removed from the grip. I had my carpal tunnel problem fixed this winter but I'll still use the Crampbuster. Whoopee! No more snoozing brake fingers! Boy, is that a uncomfortable feeling. Jack |

The best part of the CrampBuster is that at $4 it is likely the least expensive thing you can buy in a HD dealership. If I had $90 to throw away, I might try the Audiovox thing just because I like to tinker. I think it would be cool to feed it speed data from a GPS, and control the servo from the GPS instead of mounting a separate controller. |

I am not much of a tinkerer. I don't think I could do the Audiovox. And with the ride departure just 8 days away, it looks like I will experiment with o-rings and hair elastics. I have a cramp-buster type device, and it is ok - but not too safe to use when going on and off the throttle. |

Oh, I forgot to mention, I installed a Garmin Quest on the Uly. It really is a handy little device. I ordered the Quest from a place called Water and Woods and they sold it to me for $347, I added the motorcycle mount for $49.00 and bought a ram mount with device shelf for less than $50.00. So, GPS hotwired to the bike for less than $450 and an install that took less than an hour. I am mounting the radar detector and screamer horn tonight. The radar detector is being mounted to the cross bar and it took a ram mount with a 3/4" to 7/8" inch adapter. Now that is what I call a a bike ready for a Sport Adventure! |

"I am mounting the radar detector..." A couple of cops have told me that having a radar detector in your car (in states where it is legal to have one) is a gold plated guarantee that you'll never get off with a warning. I'm wondering if having one on a bike where is out there in the open and more visible, is a guarantee that you might get pulled over more often and never get off with a warning ticket. Jack |

Use a Ram Mount magnetic mount that way when you get busted by POP instant on radar you can just pop the detector off and stuff it in the tank bag before the officer walks up.

That guy sees you stuff something in the tankbag, and he will want to see what it was. Believe me, they are watching you the whole time they are pulling you over. |

Must be old age, I'm finding it easier in the long run to just go with the flow. It seems like I rarely have trouble finding a cager driving too fast so if I'm in a hurry I just fall into a loose formation and let his radar signature work for me. I'm on a roll right now, the last two times I got pulled over I got off with warnings (one in South Carolina, one in Maine, both for over the limit). With my good luck used up, I'm planning on never getting pulled over again. Jack |

I have used radar detectors since Jimmy Carter dropped the limit to 55. I have never gotten a ticket when I was using one. Only when I forgot to turn it on, and one time when I had a new phone and was trying to answer the damn phone while the radar detector was screaming. I do not really speed that often, but when traveling through small towns in Oklahoma - it is good to check your speed when the thing goes off. |

Sometimes the most simple is the best. I tried the hair elastic wedged between the grip and the handle bar. It works as well as the throttlemeister worked on my Ducati. Hair elastics - 10 for $1.00, easily the best buy in all of Buelldom! If Now........ if I could get a Buell logo on it I could retire early. |

I don't talk like that. It stands for Field Masturbation Syndrome. It is a form of carpal tunnel that one gets from spending too many months deployed.

Nixon dropped the speed limit to 55. One of the last things he did before resigning in '74. Just my $. 02 Bret |
