Linoleum Blownaparte... now THAT's one I can use. Although a grenade in the kitchen kinda covers my cooking and cleanup skills in one action. Probably looks pretty much the same in either case. |

The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog. Give the man an A++... for the copy and paste test. (USMC MOS 0151) The company clerk, I'd bet. Don't y'all laugh at that. That was a position of power, falling somewhere slightly above or below the 1st sergeant. At least in my outfit, it was. He (no her or she back then) was the man in the know. And I’m with ya on the Boy Scouts, Rocket. I learned more practical stuff there than in all those years of “school.” (Not the least of which was how to sidestep the borderline pedophile.) But I didn’t make out so well with helping the little old ladies across the street. I got the crap beat outta me with an umbrella the first time I tried that. She’d already crossed the street and was looking back to see if her friend was going to make the crossing. The Biblical method? That’s almost as good as the Columbus method: “Discover and Land” |

When I came in the Corps my inital MOS was a 2542/Communications Center Operator and that is of course one of our test messages. Back then, the mid 80's , we still used old teletype equipment and you HAD to type it all out. I got pretty good on it and was getting up to about 55 wpm, or so, on the teletype. On this old gray gear you had to BANG, the keys. It turned out that I could type about 75 wpm on a typewriter. Anyone familiar with papertape from the old teletypes and their Chads????? Had a lot of fun with those, hard as S#(! to get them off of you and out of your hair. |

The company clerk was indeed what I was trained to do. Since my military time was bashed the other day (apparently just dashing off to the recruiting office and enlisting because you are patriotic is of little value if the USMC decides not to get your ass shot at.) I'll tell you it was the best time of my life. I spent a glorious two years, the Court bashers will love this, living in the condos on Glorietta Bay (next to the Hotel del Coronado) and being the Congressional and Special Interest Aide to Major General Joseph C. Fegan, Jr. I'd been trained as a "Remington Raider" and pointed to RTR (Recruit Training Regiment) when I was intercepted during check in and told to report back to Building 31 at 0700 the following day. Yes, my ol' pal Rocket is right. I worked a mere 4 days a week, 7 hours a day, was exempt from any and everything that even looked military and spent the weekends at my Astronaut Uncle's place in Palm Desert, CA playing tennis at the club and driving his Porsche to slosh down Margarita's at Las Casuelas Nuevas out on Highway 111. Southern Marine and I had some great laughs about some of our Comm Center experiences while we were in Daytona. My favorite was the day I was promoted to NCO. I was down gathering the secret and classified comm traffic early in the morning. As I am headed back down the stairs, the General is arriving, complete with his signature cigar. He sees my new "rocker and cross rifles" and freezes in his tracks. "What in the good name of Christ has my Marine Corps gone and done?" Without batting an eye, I replied "made another leader, Sir" To which he replied.."Lord save us all". Rocket was correct. Even thought I was awarded, based on the time I was in the United States Marine Corps, I never saw combat. I turned down the orders to Annapolis and to Primary Flight Training in Pensacola, FL. I suppose I should be embarrassed by not having been in combat but, in all candor, those of you who recall those days know what it took to burn your 4F and walk into a recruiting office. Felt pretty patriotic then and I feel a fairly strong sense of camaraderie with Marines who have and those who have not seen combat. One thing about a Marine is all Marines know ANY Marine would fight to defend their country at the drop of a hat. It's why I joined, I liked the way they thought then and I like the way they think now. Funny thing about Marines, but guys like Southern Marine I felt like I knew before I ever met them simply cause I knew something about their values. Great memories, great friends. Semper Fi, Court P.S. - ask any of those guys who were under fire how they'd feel about sending all the Marines back stateside packing on home.

I bashed your service because sometimes I feel you have used it in an attempt to belittle me. I will offer my sincere apologies for my off the wall remarks, and I'd like to think you'll accept them with the good grace I send them, whether we like one another or not. I'm done with fighting with ya Court. It serves no real purpose other than cheap entertainment at the end of the day, and it's a fight I can only lose. Have a good day Marine. Rocket |

>> I turned down the orders to Annapolis… bummer, if I had this life to do over…. Was there yesterday, unfortunately it was for a memorial service for a fellow Bueller’s Pop. Two 21 gun salutes in five days -– must be that sunset thing kicking in.

Court, >>I turned down the orders..... to Primary Flight Training in Pensacola, FL. Had you gone to Pensacola, our paths might have crossed earlier. I was there for Navy Communications Technician training at the Polk Bros. typing school. Learned to type more better on a Model 19 and a Model 28 TTY. But that was back in the dawn of time in 1968, even before the internet was born. I remember that Cal Rayborn won the Daytona 200 on a Harley that year. Seems like someone else's lifetime ago. I trust her judgment. Even after the more than a few drinks I had that night, I don't know if you should, I'm not sure I trust my OWN judgement !! I don't think fmj will remember much from that night anyway, due to his own alcohol consumption !! Court, stop being serious in the middle of our frivilous conversation here !!
