On March 23rd, I leave for a trip from Tulsa, OK to Tuscon, AZ a trip of about 3000 miles round trip over six days, hopefully about 80% two lane highways. I would appreciate any "must see" sites along the way. Has anyone ridden Historic Route 66 in OK, TX, NM or AZ? |

If it were me, I would make Hwy 60 across NM and part of AZ part of the trip. |

If it were me, I would widen my loop to include Disneyland!

Roy, I rode (in a cage) on a short stretch of Route 66 in Arizona adjacent to Meteor Crater a couple of years ago. 66 was accessible in that area but in bad shape; huge potholes, rough pavement, debris, etc. It's runs right beside the interstate, so it's easy enough to get off occasionally and take short jaunts on it if you want. IIRC, Peter Egan rode a lot of Route 66 with his wife a couple of years back and wrote about it in Cycle World. He had to do a lot of back-tracking (66 is cut in a lot of places) but as I recall, he said it was a very enjoyable trip. Oh, yea. I'd highly recommend Meteor Crater as a stopping point. That is one impressive hole in the ground. |
